Time nears to count Oswalt out of Philly

08:17 AM ET 02.07 | The odds appear to be lengthening that Roy Oswalt would return to Philadelphia. Even at a cut rate, we don't see the Phillies having the wiggle room to add Oswalt -- not unless a significant salary can be subtracted in a trade. Joe Blanton is often mentioned as a trade possibility, but it's extremely difficult to imagine a team taking on his $8.5 million salary after he missed most of last season with an elbow injury. Finances probably aren't the only consideration with Oswalt. The Phils thought Brad Lidge was too big of a health risk and let him walk. Oswalt's history of back problems, which the Phillies dealt with in 2011, may also make him a risk the team is unwilling to take.

Roy will sign, when he sees the dotted line. Then the sun will shine, and all will be fine. Hope his back & arm don't turn to twine....'cause a lot of starts is a real grind!

Being as LaRussa+Duncan are now out of the geriatric hasbeen -signing business [ala Trevor Miller,Arthur Rhodes,Ryan Franklin, ect.] and this late in the game, he'll remain a desperation signing/fill-in for someone who goes down unexpectedly in spring training.
