Big Ten open to intriguing playoff format

08:18 AM ET 02.07 | Credit the Big Ten for thinking outside the box. The Big Ten is not only ready to listen to proposals regarding a national four-team football playoff, league and school officials are kicking around an intriguing idea. Sources told the Tribune that a Big Ten plan would remove the top four teams from the BCS bowl pool and have semifinal games played on the college campus of the higher seed. That would do away with the facade of "neutral" sites such as New Orleans, Miami and Pasadena, Calif., and ease travel concern for fans. The championship game then could be bid out, like the Super Bowl. The concept of the Big Ten even entertaining playoff proposals seemed laughable as recently as two months ago.

Top four, huh. Which poll? Only conf winners, or just the top four, and what if the number five team has the same record as numbers three and four and one of them are second in their conf. See, it is just not that easy. Take this past year, it could have still very easily ended up Bama vs LSU and everyone still pissed off.

Only if a team from the B1G is one of the four.

Why must you ask logical questions 0-6? Logic has no place here.

Amen, preach on Athletic Director! (I still think UTk should have chosen you for AD.)

I think they will find it very difficult to do a 4 team format. In fact any format is going to be difficult because there will always be a team on the bubble.

The only way they could do it would be using division winners instead of the BCS format.

And I like the way you think DC. If it happens you're getting a job in the athletic office for your unwavering support.

True..someone will always whine..

but I rather the #5 or #9 team be debatable than the #2... and Bama was better than Lite regardless

This is thinking outside of the box? People have been saying this for years.

Agree Bama was better than Lite. And if you are going to use polls I don't think you would be able to exclude multiple teams from the same conference...unless they can be intentionally skipped over.

Something tells me they are still pizzed that no decent bowl games are played up north. This is a way to get a bowl game there.

Yes, but it's much better to have it be the 17th ranked team, on the bubble...arguing they should be in rather than the 5th ranked team, no?
