Inge an odd man out?

08:08 AM ET 02.08 | Until it proves prudent to change course, Miguel Cabrera enters the 2012 season as the Tigers' third baseman. Which brings us to another issue relating to third base. Specifically, backups. What are the chances Brandon Inge will lose his presumed job to the younger and more versatile Danny Worth? Maybe greater than most fans would think. But first a word from our actuaries: Inge, who turns 35 in three months, has a guaranteed contract in 2012 for $5.5 million. If the Tigers bring him back in 2013, they owe him $6 million, and if they say goodbye, they must buy out his 2013 option for $500,000. ... For all his flexibility, Inge offers value only as a third baseman.

Does anyone really give a rats ***?

We know that the yankees fans are LOSERS so shut your lip and the TIGERS are WINNERS.Inge is a very good third baseman but he can not hit for a lick.

The Tigers are "winners"? When?

Used to be a very good defensive third basemen, but after surgeries on both knees and the effect of father time...he's very average defensively. At the plate he's been terrible for the last 3 seasons. He doesn't hit for enough power to hit for that weak an average and with that many K's. Problem is he's owed $5.5 million this year.

When (not if) the Cabrera experiment fails at third, hopefully Worth and Kelly get most of the time there, they hit about the same if not a little better and are definitely faster on the base paths.

If I recall correctly, doesn't Inge also play catcher?

February 8, 2012  10:56 AM ET

At 35, I think Inge is the odd man out here. I think he can play 1B as well as catch, but he looked bad at the plate last year so the younger guy will most likely win out.

Beep....beep....beep.....beep

That's a lot of dollar for a guy who doesn't really hit...

But you'll be paying him none the less......

He's got no room to complain when it comes to money. The fans love him here, why i don't know - he has been pitiful for the past 3 years

February 8, 2012  11:43 AM ET

i like the guy, hope he finds a place to play next year.

February 8, 2012  11:44 AM ET

inge could be a trade bait, but should the tigers run through a trouble with cabrera at third, and without a natural third baseman what would happen??

February 8, 2012  11:45 AM ET

the tigers are counting the chikens way before their timming!!

February 8, 2012  11:46 AM ET

wonder why the tigers didn't trade for martin prado??? could it be the contract its a beat too high from prado??

February 8, 2012  11:50 AM ET

Why not just trade him for some draft picks to help build the team up when Fielder is on the tail end of his contract and his production declines? That way you'll have some younger help for the team.

February 8, 2012  11:53 AM ET

Inge if a great team player who deserves better. This guy would be awesome coming off the bench for the Yankees or Red Sox and could be a starter for at least a forth of the teams in MLB. We'll take him here in San Diego, it would give us some time to develop sometime within our system (Chase Headley isn't the answer) while having a quality player fill the whole for the time being.
