Difficult decisions facing Saints

07:57 AM ET 02.08 | On just about any ranking of pending free agents, Saints names -- Drew Brees, Carl Nicks and Marques Colston -- figured prominently. 1. Drew Brees, QB, Saints. There's no Peyton Manning-like decision here. They need to re-sign him soon, because they need to free up the franchise tag to use on another key offensive cog. 2. Carl Nicks, G, Saints. The Saints broke the bank to lock up their other elite guard, Jahri Evans, and if a deal with Brees happens, they won't hesitate to designate Nicks their franchise player. ... [7. Marques Colston, WR, Saints.] He has proved to be especially clutch for Brees on third downs. It might be a challenge for New Orleans to pay its quarterback, him and Nicks.

I am curious to see how they go about keeping their key FAs on offense and still give Spags enough resources to build a defense.
I know I've said it before, but I can't help repeating myself: combine a Spagnuolo defense with that offense and special teams and you have one scary team.

Any bets on which team, or which (not so enlightening) news source, will show up tomorrow?

There has to be a Miami Herald piece about the 'Phins. They have a streak going.

No decision to be made. They don't care enough about this site to even worry about it.

The money it costs to keep your good players is insane!

I love the possibilities though... think of what Wade Phillips did for the Texans in one season. I'm looking forward to seeing what Spags can do for the Saints.

The rest of the NFC South isn't.

Well, this is what you get with a hard salary cap. It's pretty much impossible for any team to keep their roster intact for more than a year or two, especially for good teams.

Heck, the rest of the NFC... especially any teams with dreams of contending next season.

Agree: The one rule they should have added to the new CBA and cap structure is that you should be able to discount 20% of a contract on a player you DRAFTED and resign who becomes UFA and has ONLY been a member of your team.
That way you might be able to keep some of your players and pay them market price.
Players would benefit, teams would benefit and the fans. Just my simple thought.

True. And I do not know why the players did ot push harder on that new CBA. More of them are hurt by it.
Teams, even ones that draft badly, keep almost all of their draft picks only because they are cheaper labor and most guys are out the door in less than three years. And only to keep cap room for a few high priced guys.
