08:14 AM ET 02.08 | Credit the Pirates for trying. Even a chunk of cash as large as $10 million will not buy the Pirates an upper-tier free agent unless that player wants to play in Pittsburgh. According to multiple industry sources, the Pirates in recent days engaged in serious, detailed discussions with the agents for pitchers Roy Oswalt and Edwin Jackson. In both cases, however, talks were derailed when the player said he'd rather play elsewhere. Jackson accepted a one-year, $10 million contract Thursday from the Washington Nationals. The Pirates had offered the right-hander one- and three-year deals for slightly less money per year. ... The Pirates reached out to Oswalt's camp but were rebuffed.

I think Bucs might be in an okay position this year. Remember when they were leading after the All-Star break? Now with Pujols and Fielder out of the division, anything can happen.

You would have to be really desperate to want to play for the Pirates. They have shown no ablity to raise talent.

From where does this "upper tier" designation of Oswalt emanate?

They may be getting back in touch with the Pirates if they don't sign somewhere soon.

QUOTE(#8):

Their current starters were pitching at their career best (just about all of them) in the early part of the season. Every break went their way. They were hot. Then the pitching came back to earth and they faded. Don't know if that can happen twice like that - IMHO...

Morning Lou.

Perhaps the rules need to change somewhat to level the playing field when it comes to free agency. Maybe the teams with the worst record would have the right to the 1st negotiation. This would no doubt cause players to not reject big offers from their team;ie, Pujols, Fielder.

Gotta disagree there. They raise lots of talent. Problem is, they trade them or let them walk once a big payday comes around.

The Pirates do a very nice job of player development. Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker, Pedro Alvarez and Jose Tabata are prime examples of that.

Sometimes before then and don't always get market value...they seem to have stopped that though. if they want to be competitive again they will either have to start compiling arms ala TB or start to pay, nay overpay, FAs ala the Nats.
