08:16 AM ET 02.08 | What a difference a year makes for Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee. Gee told The Lantern editorial board Monday night he feels good about where the university stands. ... Gee was open about Jim Tressel's failure to come forward and said he was pleased about Tressel's new job with the University of Akron. Gee called new coach Urban Meyer the "finest in the country," "the greatest affirmation of the quality of this institution" and "the best recruiter in America." Despite Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema criticizing Meyer's recruiting methods, Gee stands behind him. "We hired the best coach and we went out and got the best kids so get a life," Gee said of Bielema's criticisms.

Why is a university president making comments about an opposing coach?

Same guy that talked about LSOP a couple of years ago? One of which went on to beat his B1G champ in the Rose Bowl.

Someone needs to put Gordon Gee and his bowtie to sleep.
Hasn't this guy learned his lesson from a year ago?

I am happy for Gee that he is proud to employee a greasy used car salesman as his head coach. Yes, Gee endorses telling kids and parents absolutely anything they want to hear (truth or lie) in order to get them to commit to his school.

I am also happy that Gee is proud of pomposity. When Meyer was trying to recruit current FSU LB Nigel Bradham he told him, "If you go to FSU you will never beat us." Oddly enough Bradham finished 2-2 against UF, while Urban's "have faith" recruit Matt Elam (who surely had faith his coach would be around for a full four years and not just one) for UF is 0-2 against FSU.

But keep on buying his spiel kids. Do not do any research to see if Urban is on record lying about anything in the past. Do not Google his time at Bowling Green or at Utah or at Florida. Everyone has the right to be dumb so just take his word at face value and sign on the dotted line. Just like he wants you to. Never mind that after a tough loss to Alabama he suddenly resigned. Then unresigned. Then after a tough loss to FSU he resigned again. (I guess you need to beat Michigan this year, young fellows, or you might lose your new coach!)

Oh and certainly do not look at the man behind the curtain. You risk seeing that the Great and Powerful Urban is more sham than reality. He has always had extremely good coordinators like Dan Mullen and Charlie Strong. In his only season without such minds at his side he fell to a bland 8-5. Over the course of that season his Rivals HC ranking plummeted from #2 to #18.

Ha ha. I am done bashing him for now. But I still say, "Signer beware." And I still predict Urban will have some quick success but that within 5 years it will start to become clear that he is not the coaching god some think he is. He is a sleazy, and therefore "great", recruiter but not a real Xs and Os coach. He needs to have great coordinators to truly succeed. Otherwise he must depend on having vastly superior athleticism to win.

I think all good head coaches are only as good as their assistants - especially those head coaches that are CEO types.

Not really. A lot of coaches were once OCs or DCs and often maintain a lot of influence on that side of the ball. For example Jimbo Fisher is FSU's true OC although Coach Coley has that title. One reason Mark Stoops left Arizona to come to FSU is so he would be more associated with HIS defense, and his HC brother would be given some of the credit. Saban has a great DC but definitely has a lot of say in the defense.

I was going to link a page that shows how many HCs call their own plays in FBS but that site seems to be down right now. I will try to remember to link it later though.

It would be interesting though to see how many CEO vs. heavily involved coaches there are. Particularly in the top, brand name, usually successful programs. One problem with a CEO is that you have to make good hires every time. If you make the wrong hire your team is greatly affected. Fisher needs to hit on a good DC after Stoops leaves but he does not have to worry about the OC position. That will remain a way to internally promote/give a raise to coaches who deserve a little more recognition as long as Fisher is at FSU. But a CEO will need to make the right hire for any DC or OC who leaves or the team will take a step back. Again to use FSU as an example when Richt left for UGA, Bowden promoted his son to OC and we slowly sank into mediocrity. Jeff was not good and Bobby was not involved enough anymore to hide the flaws.

LOL. I hear sobbing on the 911 tape just released.

On the bright side Urban's daughter again gets her daddy back. For a few hours at least.

Anyone who says or writes "get a life" should receive a jail term of not less than 6 months.
