All signs point toward Hawaii coach June Jones becoming SMU's new football coach, possibly by the end of today. Jones, expected to arrive in Dallas early this morning, has sent letters to friends announcing he is resigning as coach of Hawaii, according to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and The Honolulu Advertiser. The letter listed multiple reasons why Jones won't remain at the school, centering on issues the Hawaii athletic department hasn't dealt with.

why doesnt he throw his hat into the ring for NFL head coaching offers? y waste his time in college when he has a better history at the NFL level?

What's the deal? Hawaii has a lot of money in the state - the AD should be able to get some supporters to spring for a facilities upgrade... they love stuff like this if you let them put their name on it...

he had one good year in the NFL, stay in college June, Hawaii!

Bet it is one of the "grass is always greener" things. And how do you tell admin to change the font back to what it was in the comment box?

I can't believe Hawaii is letting Jones go! What the heck is going on? They were nothing before he came back to Hawaii, heck half the nation didn't even know that Hawaii had a football team! Besides this will kill Hawaii recruiting and next year is Hawii rebuilding Year! Hawaii needs to either keep Jones or find a top notch Head Coach or kiss the next century of Football Good Bye!

Jones is NOT going anywhere and certainly NOT S.M.U. ?
PLEASE !

Jones is NOT going anywhere ...

Don't bet house money on it. Without a big commitment from the University, then there is nothing more he can accomplish there...

I think it has *everything* to do with Jones wanting to leave. At the heart of every player is competition to win and Jones has taken that into coaching. Probably wants back into the NFL. Don't take it to heart, clown: he probably won't stay at SMU that long. And he's left a damn good program at UH. It ain't time to run up the flag yet.

January 6, 2008  12:19 PM ET

Why? WHy? He left $1 million in Hawaii for $2 million in Dallas? Idiot.

January 6, 2008  12:31 PM ET

Herman Frazier sucks. He'd better understand local sentiments and get on the next plane out of Hawaii if this indeed happens. It's a disgrace that their budget is one million below Boise St. Given that differential, Jones did a fantastic job at Hawaii.

This is a real black mark on Frazier and the UH administration. Football is the bellweather program that funds most of UH athletics. He's not leaving because of salary issues, Jones is not like Miles or Saban; he wanted an upgrade to the facilities and better pay for his assistant coaches. All of his requests have been turned down by the administration, who had plenty of time to address these things. I guess it is what happens with a Republican governor, and a female at that. Lingle and everyone below her deserve everyone's scorn.

Hawaii might as well go to Division IAA; they're that Mickey Mouse.

HUMBUG. I'd like to kick Frazier's okole.

Like it or not, it's the same reason Rodriguez left WVU-live and learn.

January 6, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Send Herman Frazier a bar of soap.

January 6, 2008  01:04 PM ET

blue balls, it's NOT the same reason as the sleazebag Rodriguez. You know nothing about Hawaii so it's better to keep your mouth closed on the matter.

Maybe it 's the small size of the place, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but it can be a very provincial place, where petty politics and politicians have a greater impact than on the Mainland. I got sick of it, and maybe Jones has had enough of Frazier and the administration already, and the feeling may have been mutual.

Captain/localboy, now what? There are some qualified guys out there, with Hawaii roots, like Norm Chow or Duane Akina, who got scapegoated for Mack Brown's failures. Methinks they have to have someone who knows O'HANA and the Hawaii mentality, someone kamaaina.

January 6, 2008  01:20 PM ET

This is typical Hawaii. The mindset there is tourism, not athletics. Lived there for three years and the only time I went to Aloha stadium was for the pro bowl. Crooked politics! Teachers get paid dirt. The public schools are are suffering. So why not let the athletics suffer. I'm surprised he stayed that long.

They'll have to recruit surfers now.

January 6, 2008  01:25 PM ET

Can they make up their mind? First Sparano's got the Fins job, then he can't because of the Rooney Rule, then he's got the job.

Now it's June Jones who supposedly signed with Hawaii and is instead going with SMU?

Good luck with that one June. I'm not sure I'd trade the sunny shores of HI for the upscale locale of Highland Park.

UH getting what they deserve (Brennan having to beg for soap in the locker room, Jones using hand held mini-cam he waon at a charity auction, etc. etc. etc.). They are fools to let him go, UH will never reach this height again.

At SMU he he has absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain -- 1 - 10 team with no bowl game in 23 years. If he gets them to a bowl game or even mediocrity in 2 - 3 years, then he bolts to the NFL or retires a hero.

What is the downside at SMU for $2 million a year? Don't see any.
