Bird picks Kobe over LeBron

08:05 AM ET 02.09 | Larry Bird took the occasion of a recent podcast to ponder the Kobe vs. LeBron debate. It's a question that has been posed to just about every NBA analyst over the last few years as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James remain atop the league's star-studded landscape. ... Naturally, his decision came down to Kobe and LeBron. "Well, probably Kobe, because of the fact that ... well, of course he wouldn't have been shooting as much as he does now ... but his desire to win, his dedication, to always get better, uh, and he's just, he's just tough," Bird said. "He's just a tough cat." ... "It would have probably been more fun to play with LeBron, but if you want to win and win and win, it's Kobe."

When you're right, you're right Larry.

The people I want on my team are Kobe, Irving, Durant, and Howard.. Lebron can come off the bench and play in the first 3 quarters..

I agree with My Main Man Bird..... 5 titles, 1 MVP, 14 All Star Appearances, Many more awards and accolades For Kobe, 0 Titles, 2 MVP Seasons With No Title, Rookie Of the Year, 8 All Star Appearances, Many Awards and Accolades for Lebron.... Not to Mention that Lebron Chokes When the Pressure is on (Example: 2011 Finals) I'm Taking Kobe......

Did Bird's comment come before or after Perkins response to Lebron?

February 9, 2012  09:42 AM ET

It's a no brainer really.

February 9, 2012  10:02 AM ET

Nothing to debate here at all. The only ring Lebron has is the one left around his neck from his own choking hands!

February 9, 2012  10:06 AM ET

I like how he added that it would have been more fun to play with LeBron, but that if you want to WIN, it's Kobe all the way.

February 9, 2012  10:07 AM ET

Why is this news? Anybody in their right mind would choose a proven closer over a prove choke arist.

I am a Heat fan and Larry is right...

Kobe has 5 rings. Until LeBron closes out more games and wins a few titles, the debate will rage on.

Now...if LeBron and the Heat win 2 or 3 rings...then there is no argument....LeBron is the better player by far.

Everyone Wants To Play For The Lakers, Bro.

February 9, 2012  10:14 AM ET

Leberon gave it up when he decided to be on Dwaynes Team.

Kobe, had the guts to take the lead role after Shaq adn win two more championships.

Enough Said.

James will never be taken seriously by any of the legends of the game because he was too much of a sissy to try and win a ring on his own and make a TEAM work. They all were too competitive to want to take the easy way out like James did. I've never seen a professional athlete so afraid to lose.

And it doesn't matter how many rings he might win in Miami, he still had to run away there to go get them, not earn them.

February 9, 2012  10:24 AM ET

"......but if you want to win and win and win, it's Kobe."

No doubt Larry, no doubt.

February 9, 2012  10:27 AM ET

Put LeBron on the Lakers teams that Kobe won championships with and they don't win them...Put Kobe on the Heat last year or this and they win it all...LeBron is on D-Wade's team and any rings he wins will not push him past Kobe...And I don't even like Kobe!
