08:21 AM ET 02.09 | Stephane Richer remembers the scene from a photograph, one that helps paint the picture of a depressed athlete, a scene from the documentary Darkness and Hope: Depression, Sports and Me. Richer is part of New Jersey's Stanley Cup parade -- he was the second leading scorer in the 1994-95 playoffs. He's in a convertible with a cigar in his mouth and is giving Devils' fans the thumbs up. "I look pretty sharp, right?" said Richer. "You did," said [TSN broadcaster Michael Landsberg]. "You look like you got it all." "I got it all," agrees Richer. "Just 'til about four days after, I tried to kill myself." ... [Richer] doesn't pull any punches in the documentary. "I can't lie and I can't hide this: Every day's a challenge."

Richer once fired a shot during warm up that was so hard it shattered Brodeur's cup.

I wonder how many other players have faced demons like this.

I'm guessing this is not hockey related?

I'm getting old so I don't remember him being traded to the Leafs.

after the 3 deaths this summer and continuing research about concussions - severe depression is a related symptom - so it could be hockey related.

Now now, let's not be mean here...
The Leafs were good in Richer's prime, remember?

the "experts" will try like heck to connect this, but to my amateur eyes, those three weren't really connected, except that they were all tough guy hockey players. They all faced different issues that i think while exacerbated ( maybe...) by their chosen profession, were certainly nat caused by it. We tend to like things tied up in a neat little package, like a tv cop show, but real life doesn't work like that.

You said it, brother.

It's a guy coming clean about depression. It's a hot topic right now, and he played hockey, so it is hockey related. If the story helps someone else address like issues, it's a good thing.

You're old enough to remember when hockey was played on grass without skates, using sticks with nets..............................used to be called lacrosse! Went out to dinner to a cave, dragging your date by her hair. Dang! You are old.

Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien and Wade Belak.

agree - concussion(s) does not equal depression, and there is no 1 to 1 link to causality. Plus there is no mention of concussions for Richer's story bit here.

I mention it only as a topic, as M Savard, and the 3 from this summer had previously reported the depression - and in Savard's case, possibly a symptom of the head traumas.

anything that helps people deal with it is good, but let's hope that people don't try to put a little bow on it and say it was from playing hockey
