08:03 AM ET 02.09 | Colin Kaepernick doesn't necessarily see himself as a career backup. The former Wolf Pack quarterback out of Turlock, Calif., didn't seem frustrated about being a bench jockey behind Alex Smith all season, but it helped fire his desire and competitive spirit. The 2011 lockout limited Kaepernick's ability to prepare for the start of the season, and now with a better grasp of the 49ers' complicated offense under coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman, Kaepernick plans to prepare as much as possible to wrest the starting job away from Smith when the 2012 season begins. ... "I plan on being in San Francisco and plan on trying to take the starting job. That's what your goal is as a football player."

When you're riding the pine behind a guy who took his team to the Conference Championship game, the smart thing to do is buy some sandpaper so you don't get splinters in your butt, because that's where you'll be next season, too.
Alex Smith has a lot of detractors, but he plays well enough to win and he's still getting better.

Brady was more cocky - upon first meeting the owner, indicated he was going to be the starter...

This.
Smith is the starter next season. I'm interested to see if he can continue to play at the level he did this year.

Agreed, Harbaugh hid alot of Smith's flaws in the way he called plays... next year teams are gonna take away Vernon Davis and force them to throw to the WR's which Smith sucks at utilizing... his numbers aren't as great as people portray.. the only impressive number to me is his touchdown to int ratio...Kapernick will have the job sooner then people will believe trust me on that

He finally has a coach that believes in him and his ability. Another WR wouldn't hurt.

Kapernick is obviously basing his delusions on the six touchdowns he threw in mop up duty against the Packers, or at least he is imagining it was himself who did it

And look how that has worked out. I'd call that confidence.

Agreed. But I also have no problem with Kapernick's comments. He wants to compete; it's to be expected.

Given the potential for injuries and regardless of any public statements, back-ups had better be prepared to become starters (didn't Ditka release a back-up who publicly stated he was not ready)

This... I want my back-up QB to believe he can be the starter... and work towards that end. If he is good enough, great. If he is but good enough and the other guy is better, even better.

That's far superior than saying "would you like fries with that?"

Kaepernick was a pretty high draft pick. Just because you havent heard of him doesnt mean hes not got a chance to be a bigtmie QB.
