08:11 AM ET 02.09 | Whether Red Sox Nation is thrilled is another matter, but the team is getting closer to having its Spring Training squad squared away by Ben Cherington. The Red Sox still appear to be in the running for free agent righty Roy Oswalt. According to one major league source, the issue is no longer money, but geography. Oswalt evidently prefers the Midwest (St. Louis) or South (Texas). But if those scenarios don't work out, the Red Sox would be an alternative. There are some back issues with Oswalt, but none severe enough to scare the Red Sox away. Cherington said the team would have some sort of definitive resolution on veterans Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield by next week.

At this point I don't care who he signs with. I can't believe this rates a story a day.

So far everyone has been eliminated in the Oswalt sweepstakes. Looks like he's winning

Forget about Oswalt. He doen't want to pitch anywhere but St. Louis or Texas. If his heart isn't in it, then he's only coming for a paycheck, and that never works out. Let the young kids have a chance to prove themselves.

"Oswalt evidently prefers the Midwest (St. Louis) or South (Texas). But if those scenarios don't work out, the Red Sox would be an alternative."
If this is indeed his mindset, the Red Sox should immediately reduce the base salary in their contract offer and bump up the incentive bonuses. Why guarantee a decent payday to a player who clearly does not have your team on his 'short list'? If things fall through for him elsewhere and he decides to come to Boston as his 'Plan C', it should be with the clear understanding that he will have to work his backside off for every last penny. If he's not willing to do that then there should be no interest in signing him at all.

Oswalt would be a nice addition to the Cards rotation...
Problem is...who do you move out?
Wainright, Carpenter and Garcia are 1-2-3...then you have Lohse, Westbrook.
I think StL would be smart in signing him because there is always an injury or two during the season and having his Leftie arm would be nice as well...

If the Red Sox are trailing in this chase, it is because they aren't really trying.
Red Sox own a portion of the Boston Globe. So the Sox are having the Boston Globe put out these bogus stories about big name players they are trying to acquire. It's all about trying to keep their fan base from realizing that are actual paring salary as fast as they can. They vastly overpaid for Crawford, and are looking to start to absorb the cost.
Sox fans should expect this to continue for a while.
