Dampier too big to help Hawks?

08:08 AM ET 02.10 | With the signing of Erick Dampier, the Hawks invite the question of whether the big guy is too big. He was last listed at 265 but, based on what I saw today, I'd say he's at least 20 pounds north of that. I know the pool of free-agent centers is dreadfully shallow but Dampier never was the fleetest guy so now I wonder how effective he can be with the added weight. The biggest red flags for Dampier last season were drastic declines in his scoring and rebounding rates. ... The question with Dampier probably centers on whether he's in good enough shape to approach those efficiency numbers now. It's not a good sign when both coach and player say he needs time to work into game shape when he's on a 10-day.

Dsagree.
damp always got a bad rap cause he was overpaid. But he was functional
but at this stage, playing for minimum, if he can come in, play 10-15 minutes, give 6 fouls, he is worth a shot

There is a reason why the Heat chose Curry over Dampier

I hated the fact the heat had him.

Speaks volumes

I'm trying to be optimistic about this. When you look at what we have at the Center position, how can bringing in a true Center be a bad thing. Over the past 5 years he has a shooting% about 60%. A LOT better than Collins. He's a big man that plays like a big man. And that's what the Hawks really need.

February 10, 2012  10:46 AM ET

they're really thin up front. i know he's only like 6'9" and 250 or so, but is ivan johnson not a good enough stopgap to reduce zaza's minutes? i liked his energy in the games i've seen.

February 10, 2012  10:54 AM ET

And as far as Curry goes, so far this year he is only outscoring Dampier by 6 points so far this year.

February 10, 2012  11:13 AM ET

Desperate times, desperate measures. Maybe his agent had a favor coming from the Hawks. Eddy Curry has a contribution to make--his size will count for something in the playoffs.

February 10, 2012  11:19 AM ET

Dampier can make the same contribution for the Hawks. When the Hawks play Orlando tonight, things are going to get ugly as soon as Zaza gets in foul trouble and we try to put Ivan Johnson on Dwight.

I really don't see Dampier helping.
