MLB analyst: Oswalt not going to Texas

07:34 AM ET 02.11 | Once the tumult of free agency started to wind down in early January, word came out that free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt apparently wanted to pitch in Texas. And while Oswalt -- and two-time 20-game winner and multiple All-Star during his days with the Houston Astros -- would have been the type of pitcher the Rangers' would've jumped at in years past, budget restrictions seems to have the club laying back on the Oswalt race. In fact, one analyst is so convinced that the Rangers aren't a realistic suitor for Oswalt that he's ready to count them out already. "When you start to look at the landscape, these teams that he???s been trying to get to sign him just aren???t getting there," ESPN's Jayson Stark said on Baseball Tonight. "He wanted to go to Texas, [but] that's not going to happen.

Oh my God, just sign somewhere Roy. Your options are limited, due primarily to your questionable back.
I would love to have this guy in the Sox rotation, but not at too heavy a price.

Took the words out of my mouth.
He wants either Texas or St. Louis as a landing place because they're both near his home in Mississippi. If he's a family man, then I can understand. But they don't want him, and others do. And with a bulging disc, he's not bargaining from a position of strength.
If he wants to pitch, he'll need to go where he's wanted. All that fuss to ride the bench somewhere just because it's close to home? That isn't a way to finish an otherwise exceptional career.

Injury potential aside, he's a better pitcher than Edwin Jackson who just got $11 million for 2012. And there are contending teams that need a 5th starter. Does that answer your question?

But you cannot put injury potential aside. This is a BIG factor. I for one do not want this guy pitching for Boston as it will be a waste of money. Why do I say this? ----> because I have two herniated bulging disks myself and I know his back pain is going to flare up again.

First... Best of luck to you. I know you must be in near-constant pain.
Second... There's a BIG difference between a bulging disc and two herniated discs.
Third... He could be given a contract heavy on incentives, and it would be win-win.

The more this plays out, the more I see Roy going back to Philly.

I have had both. They can reoccur at a moments notice. You are correct about a contract with HEAVY inventives - the only way to go. Just paying him the 5-9 million (which you and others always allude to without qualifying) does not cut the mustard.
A herniated disk refers to a problem with one of the rubbery cushions (disks) between the individual bones (vertebrae) that stack up to make your spine.
A spinal disk is a little like a jelly donut, with a softer center encased within a tougher exterior. Sometimes called a slipped disk or a ruptured disk, a herniated disk occurs when some of the softer "jelly" pushes out through a crack in the tougher exterior.
A herniated disk can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg. On the other hand, many people experience no symptoms from a herniated disk. Most people who have a herniated disk don't need surgery to correct the problem.
Bulging Disc Overview
A bulging disc can cause discomfort and disability in various parts of the body, depending on the location of the affected disc(s). A bulging disc occurs when one of the discs between your vertebrae develops a weak spot and pops out beyond its normal perimeter. Interestingly, many people might have a bulging disc and not even know it, as long as the bulging area does not press upon surrounding tissues. When the bulging disc impinges on the nerves of the spinal column, however, that???s typically when symptoms begin. In the lower back, the damaged disc can cause pain to travel to the hips, buttocks, legs, and feet. In the upper back, the pain would radiate from the neck down the arm and to the fingers.

I am sure he would be better than AJ, even with a bad back LOL.

The Yankees should offer this guy a minor-league contract with an invitation to appear in Spring Training. No risk at all. If Oswalt shines, they can figure out what to do with him then.

it would be a great risk if, the yankees do sign this pitcher, due to his already heavy rash of injuries, now if the franchise sign him with the condition that he should perform 100% as win 15 games, pitch 200 innings, strikeout 180 hitters, not time off in the DL, then the yankees should give him 5 millions per one season!!!

He's pretty damn particular for a guy coming off severe back woes. $8-$10M for one year? He's worth about $1M guaranteed, and an incentive-laden contract.

Do they need an 8th starter? My understanding is that they don't want him.

He needs a reality check here. I don't think there any clubs willing to pay him close to what he and his agent are looking for.
