08:09 AM ET 02.11 | In an effort to rid themselves of underperforming pitcher A.J. Burnett, the Yankees are turning to a familiar trading partner. A team source confirmed Friday that the Yankees have held recent discussions with the Pirates about Burnett, with the understanding that the Bombers would have to absorb a ???significant??? portion of the flighty righty???s contract, which has two years and $33 million remaining.

Just do it. AJ might actually have some value in another city, especially in the NL. He would probably have a chance to be the ace in Pittsburgh, and it would probably humble him and perhaps motivate him.
I don't think he is needed in New York. The rotation of CC-Pineda-Nova-Kuroda-Hughes looks pretty good, and either Burnett or Hughes needs to hit the bricks.
As a Sox fan, I hate to see him go.

Why not wait to see how it goes in spring training? If Hughes looks good, he would have more trade value, if not, then you need Burnett.
Heck , you put up with him this long, two years and he is out of there anyways.
Since when did signing a guy for a few million to DH become a budget buster? BS. Luxury tax or not, the Yankees are turning a profit.

You want to move a pitcher who is over paid at $15 million a year? How about finding someone to pick up some of Sorryassano's bull pen act?

burnett can pitch well, i guess the problem lays on the pitching coach, or its the manager's fault???

I suppose. But he pitched the best of any starter in the playoffs last year, and he is healthy.
Heck, they went with him this long.

The Yanks will move Burnett for the same reason they moved Montero. Too many people competing for the same spot. But i agree with earlier posters. why now? why not see what shakes out in spring training? there is a strong possibility that nova or hughes will be inconsistent and more suited for long term bullpen relief. Long term bullpen relief for Burnett probably! The yankees gave up on Andrew Brackman, one of their "killer B's" coming up, that is probably the biggest reason that Burnett is still around. I dont think Burnett is a playing in new york well kinda guy. Like Kevin Brown. But making a deal where the yanks eat a bunch of his salary doesnt make sense if the yanks are supposedly trying to stay within a budget. You might as well keep him.

We all know the saying...you can never have too much pitching.
Either way, the Yanks are gonna pay the salary. Unless you can move him for a good prospect or a good bullpen arm, why do it?

I got a better idea. Who the hell cares. The majors are saturated with better teams than NY.

I would do the trade in a heart beat. Trading him to the Pirates the yankees won't have to see him in the AL. And then the Yankees making the move would give them some room to make additional moves. DO IT!

Burnett is a PR nightmare, unfortunately. He is a great 5 inning pitcher, and once every two times through the rotation, that's OK...but the hard lesson the Yankees have learned is that they need their starters to go a minimum of 6 and are better when they go 7, so they can hand off to a mix of Joba, Sori, DRob and Mo...the rest of the bullpen is solid, but the end-of-the-game, 1 inning guys are great. Hughes is younger, Garcia is more reliable...Burnett is expensive and expendable.

I'm with you, but they probably want to clear some salary for a couple FA Bench moves and trust the young arms to fill in.
