08:28 AM ET 02.11 | Hines Ward is one of the iconic Pittsburgh Steelers. As such, Ward playing football in anything but black and gold would feel like a mismatch. But NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora told "NFL Total Access" Friday that Ward won't be back next season, according to his sources.

He is a cap casualty. If the numbers are correct, the Steelers have little choice.
How is it possible that the team cap is LOWER than it has been in years when the league is making more money than ever?
The owners won the CBA Bowl, and it wasn't even close.

Ain't that the truth. Good luck, Hines. Linebackers everywhere are hoping that they won't see you any more.

Hines, im sorry it ended like this. I think you still got some skill but we're strapped for cash. I think you can still play a year or 2 and contribute somewhere. Sad to see you not be in black and gold though if you decide to keep playing.

Find it hard to believe. Dan Rooney said that letting Franco play the last year of his career in Seattle is one of his biggest regrets.

If they have to cut Hines, there's not much they can do, they were 20 M over the cap, released McFadden and Battle, restructured Timmons, Woodley and Taylor this week and they still have FA to try to sign--Wallace among others and the draft. seems the Cap is low this year. I agree with 50, the Owners won the battle for the CBA.

I'll wait and see what shakes out with contract restructurings, free agent availability, the new OC's plans, and a different phase of the moon.

Great career, wouldn't be surprised to see him take a front office position or community/ambassador position with the Steelers.

Ben and Troy are also onboard to restructure

Wow. I guess it will happen sooner or later, but it's hard to imagine the Steelers without Ward when the time comes.

Hated Whiney Hiney but the boy could play.

Yes he could. One tough SOB, and if he wants to keep playing some teams will look hard to him.

To para-phrase Ernie Accorsi (and whoever he lifted the line from)...

It's better to dump 'em a year too early, than a year too late.

Based on last season - not sure the Steelers followed that mantra :-)

Agreed. Just like Montana and Rice, hard to imagine. Hope he can restructure.

There wasn't any place on the team for Hines because of all the young talented receivers. He should just bow out gracefully and as Chuck Noll used to say "get on with his life's work".

February 11, 2012  12:59 PM ET

I think they will cut him and resign him, he can be a useful third down receiver, the steelers need to get some offensive lineman, that would help their passing game a lot.

Hines Ward loves this team. He may renegotiate his contract just to stay and play another year. I don't think he'd go somewhere else just for the money, but who couldn't use a possession receiver of his caliber?
