09:35 AM ET 02.12 | In this, their lost season, there could be good news on the horizon for the Canadiens. While it???s a long way from being reality because there???s a negotiation for a CBA ahead, sources say several GMs have asked the NHL to consider a one-time amnesty clause in the next agreement to buy out one contract that wouldn???t have a cap hit. The clause would allow the Habs to rid themselves of Scott Gomez and his cap hit of $7.3 million for the next two seasons without having to absorb the hit. Habs GM Pierre Gauthier has hopelessly tried to deal Gomez, who finally ended a goal-scoring slump that dated back more than a year when he scored against the Islanders on Thursday.

They didn't need him.

With efforts like that from Celine and the goaltending of "Optimus Crime" the Canadiens told him to rest.

I spit up my pizza when that happened. That was actually the worst effort I've seen the Leafs give since the lockout. Total no-show when you need it most, story of this team's recent past. Pathetic.

Were you at the game? I didn't see the "I <3 Canuck" sign.

Is it true this has been added to their uniforms for anonymity?

Looks like Rotten Ronnie has the Leafs right where he wants them, 2 points away from being out of the playoffs......................................again.

As for the story above, I have no real objection to the amnesty clause provided it prohibits GM's from using it on existing contracts, no retroactive BS.

February 12, 2012  11:31 AM ET

Never understood why the Habs took him off the Rangers hands.

February 12, 2012  12:13 PM ET

That sounds like a gimmick that won't really do a whole lot. It might be better if they allowed other teams to pay a portion of the salary. That way Burke could pick up Gomez and only pay $1 million dollars a year while the Habs are on the hook for the rest of it. The player gets the full salary, but the team get less of a cap hit.

Haha nah no more Leaf games this year. My buddy's season ticket allotment has been used up and I'm not wealthy/dumb enough to purchase them.

Uniforms. Daily dress code. Whatever's clever

The Leafs all-star d-man looked great on that one didn't he?
Still trying to figure out why the Leafs jumped to sign Sawchuk, I mean Reimer, to that contract. One year does not a career make...especially with gumpers.
Brian Elliott should have waited till the end of the year and maybe the Leafs or Flyers would have thrown an armored car full of cash his way.

Well, at least they learned their lesson and didn't go taking another overpaid dud like Kaberle off of Carolina's hands.

Oh wait.....never mind.

I agree but, when it comes to useless chets like Gomez, I'm incline to make an exception, just to see the dog turd banished from the NHL and deported to the KHL.

Ummm. On the other hand, if BB can rustle up a first rounder or two ......

February 12, 2012  04:22 PM ET

Flyers fans are praying for an amnesty clause in the new CBA: They can use it on Prongers with 4 years left as he is probably never going to play again with post-concussion syndrome, or Bryz is 8 year left as he has been a huge disappointment.

February 12, 2012  04:34 PM ET

This just plain dumb, if a GM is stupid enough to take on a contact like Gomez then be a Man and buy him out Molson`s has lots of money ..

I have no quarrel with Montreal sending Gomez to the KHL as long as the cap hit stays.

February 12, 2012  04:47 PM ET

I could see teams exploit this. Team signs a high priced player, gets close to the end of the season & does their buyout & then resigns the same player for a minimum salary. Team get a small cap hit, the player gets paid, and the team can sign another player with the Cap savings.

February 12, 2012  04:52 PM ET

So... once again the GM's and owners are asking the league to step in and save them from themselves?

Also, this is a land-mine. A GM that uses this will tell the owner he's so terrible he has to have an amnesty clause to get out from under contracts he gave out. Maybe, emphasis on the maybe, players will see an organization that doesn't feel like honoring the contracts it writes and decide to sign elsewhere. Like for a team that hasn't burdened itself with poor management choices year after year after year. (Montreal, Calgary, etc.)

Scrap this idea and kill the cap while they are at it...
