08:16 AM ET 02.13 | As it turns out, Manny Ramirez reportedly does not have to be completely idle during his suspension for violating baseball's drug policy. Ramirez, who turns 40 on May 30, is eligible to play in spring-training games, according to major-league sources. Once the season starts, he can work out with either major- or minor-league clubs, provided he leaves by the time the gates open. He also can appear in games during extended spring training, which generally is for players who are not ready to play for a full-season club, either due to injury or inexperience. ... The Oakland Athletics remain the front-runners to sign Ramirez, but first want to add a reliever, according to major-league sources.

3rd drug test fail on its way.

The guy is desperate to go to a last place team if he goes to the A's. He can be Manny being Manny all he wants but nobody is going to see it.

The frontrunner? Like there's some kind of competition for his services. He'll be begging for a team to sign him.

Should the possible signing of Manny Ramirez really be referred to a sweepstakes? Why?

He and Conseco would be great on the same team LOL. They both could play in the old timers game.

The A's want to first add a reliever: okay, I think Manny is your man. He pissed away a lot during his career.

February 13, 2012  09:36 AM ET

Whoever signs him will regret it, probably before Spring Training is over!

Who on earth would want this guy anymore? Front runner.....sheesh! He's 40 and either on steroids or post-steroids. The team that "wins" the Manny race can look forward to injuries and an "I don't really feel like playing today" attitude. He's slow with very little baseball instinct beyond hitting.

Didn't realize anyone was desperate enough. Can he contribute? Perhaps minimally. But what he brings in the form of cancer to a locker room isn't worth it.

and greatly reduced bat speed, unless he has discovered an undetectable magic elixir for that

What do you mean frontrunner - that would mean teams would actually be interested in wanting to sign this choad. Manny's agent must have hired a good publicist to make it look like somebody actually gave a **** about his client! Only an idot would sign a 40 year old - with a still to be served drug suspension.

I haven't really heard a lot of teammates gripe about him. In fact, the opposite. He had that run in with Youkilis, but it seems like Youkilis might be a bit of a clubhouse hard case.

I think the whole "clubhouse cancer" bit as it relates to Manny is trumped up by fans and media. We're not talking about Barry Bonds, here. I've heard a lot of guys that played with Manny say they loved it.
