Amnesty clause coming to NHL?

08:28 AM ET 02.13 | Montreal is but one city where "cap money" has become almost more important than real money. In this, their lost season, there could be good news on the horizon for the Canadiens. While it's a long way from being reality because there's a negotiation for a CBA ahead, sources say several GMs have asked the NHL to consider a one-time amnesty clause in the next agreement to buy out one contract that wouldn't have a cap hit. The clause would allow the Habs to rid themselves of Scott Gomez and his cap hit of $7.3 million for the next two seasons without having to absorb the hit. Habs GM Pierre Gauthier has hopelessly tried to deal Gomez, who finally ended a goal-scoring slump that dated back more than a year.

This is, I suppose, from the "R" part of their name, as oppossed to the "truth" part?

So what we have here in fact is this; This thing could happen, and several teams would LIKE it to happen, but nothing is certain to happen until the CBA gets done, which is also not certain to happen?
C'mon T&R...we are the midst of a nice playoff chase, there is a trade deadline coming up, and you have to start making stuff up?

Can't they come up with a new thread for Monday?

The Pens are tied with the Flyers and Malkin is on fire! (He still needs to learn how to play center in his own zone though.) Staal is doing good in his two games back.

No clauses until Xmas...please.

February 13, 2012  09:40 AM ET

They did this last time, so I would assume they would do it again this time.

February 13, 2012  09:40 AM ET

I for one, would be opposed to anything that would let Montreal off the hook for the boat load of bad contracts that they have.

This article is almost word for word from the Ottawa Sun article that was posted yesterday. Right down to the "lost season" comment.

I do like the idea, tho. The Flyers can buy out Bryz and give themselves a chance at competing in the playoffs.

"Amnesty clause coming to NHL?"

When you put a headline like this together with a name like Gomez, you'd think T&R is talking about illegal immigration here.

February 13, 2012  11:05 AM ET

You make a deal as bad as the one with Gomez, you eat it!

I agree with you. They made poor choices and shouldn't get rewarded with a mulligan.

Didn't we already lose one season because the league wanted/needed "fiscal responsibility" or whatever buzzwords they were spewing during the last lockout? And hare we are, a few short years removed from that travesty, and the clubs now want amnesty from cap-killing contracts? No f'n way. If owners are going to continue to allow GMs to dole out contracts spanning the better part of a decade in term, and for ridiculous annual amounts, then you deserve what you get. If that hamstrings a club for multiple years, too bad. Perhaps owners will actually take a longer look at who they have making these franchise-killing deals and stop giving idiot GMs carte blanche to hand out these ridiculous contracts.
