08:01 AM ET 02.13 | Time could be on the Lions' side if they hope to land Cortland Finnegan. That's because the Tennessee Titans have yet to negotiate with Finnegan, an All-Pro in 2008 who turned 28 on Feb. 2. The Tennessean newspaper reported Friday that the "Titans still haven't made any movement in talks with the team's most high-profile free agent to be." According to a league source not affiliated with the Lions, Detroit could be one of the key teams interested in Finnegan if the Titans don't sign him before free agency starts March 13. ... The Lions -- along with St. Louis, Dallas, Oakland, San Francisco, Atlanta, Tampa Bay and Jacksonville -- could make a play for Finnegan, according to the source.

New England could also use help in the defensive backfield. Don't look for them to join in a bidding war for him, though. If he goes to most of the teams listed, it will only be for the money.

Finnegan is a good player and, if the Lions want to continue their upward climb in the NFC, they need help in the d-backfield. But that's an awful lot of teams on that list: who knows where Finengan will land. The Lions should build through the draft, adding Finnegan only if the numbers work for them.

With a lower cap than last year and the new rookie payscale, greedy free agents are going to find a different landscape when they start looking for money out of whack with their talents. Watch a lot of guys test the waters and end up on their old teams for a lot less than they thought they could get.

Completely agree. Would love to see him in New England, but I see him going for the $$$. Can't hate on him for that because I would do the same.

All the wannabe teams understand that teams like the giants, NO and Frisco got to where they were with a pass rush. Teams like the Packers, Steelers and Patriots need to improve on that to make it over the hump.

Just like the Mario Williams post...you can replace Lions with the names of pretty much every other team. Who couldn't use a CB like this still in his prime? Panthers can for darn sure

The Lions are at $122 million for 2012 right now.
They will need to do some serious cutting to sign any big name free agent. All those early round picks they got for years are starting to add up.
They will struggle to get under the cap, FA is not a real big option for them right now.
