08:09 AM ET 02.13 | Josh Hamilton did appear at a book signing over the weekend, but he didn't talk to the media, and his future in Texas is somewhat uncertain. The focus for [the Rangers and Hamilton] remains on his recovery and not on a long-term contract, general manager Jon Daniels reiterated on Sunday. "The contract is not really the priority with Josh right now -- his health and family are," Daniels said. "We???re not going to preempt that for anything about a contract. Given how close we are, I don???t anticipate that happening before spring training. We all agreed to table things before we got to spring training." Earlier this offseason, Hamilton had set a date for the beginning spring training to get a deal done.

The focus for the Rangers should be can the guy stay remotely sober? After all they make be making a $50+ million investment in this guys. Two relapses in two years now, who knows.

This really should come as no surprise.

Didn't the Rangers see Hamilton's gatekeeper leave this year? Didn't they have someone on staff who kept tabs on Josh after hours? Did they hire a new one to monitor Hamilton?

There's more than that. Now they say he had sex with some woman in the bathroom and that he may not have been drinking, but said he was drinking because it would be lesser of a story than cheating on his wife. It will be an interesting spring training.

He's a risk, and it's the smart thing to table contract talks until some time has passed. If it were me, I'd table them until the All Star break; Josh needs to show that he's working with his support team and can be someone who is on top of his issues before the Rangers give him boatloads of money. He knows it, and the team knows it. Luckily, the Rangers are led by two very smart and very pragmatic guys; Jon Daniels and Nolan Ryan. They're going to do what's best for the TEAM, and then what's best for Hamilton health-wise .... and that's the way it should be. He's a great player, and these relapses aren't really all that surprising, given what he did to himself earlier in his career. I mean, when you miss three whole seasons from drugs and alcoholism, that's a serious, big thing. Unlike some other teams, though, the Rangers aren't going to squeeze every little bit out of this guy and then toss him on the trash heap. If Josh is willing to do what he needs to do in order to make sure he has a life after baseball, then he'll see the money. If not, then .....

Right. The hooker wasn't dead. She just had a cold.

Another Steve Howle....just can't trust those folks unfortunately, but Nolan will not put up with it...and shouldn't.....
