Edsall blocking O'Brien from Vandy

08:16 AM ET 02.14 | Good news and bad news came Monday to quarterback Danny O'Brien. [O'Brien] was given his release by the football program, but Vanderbilt and other schools were excluded as transfer possibilities. His transfer release also excludes upcoming Atlantic Coast Conference opponents as well as upcoming nonconference opponents such as West Virginia and Temple. Max Garcia's and Mario Rowson's releases contain similar provisions. Vanderbilt is coached by former Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin. O'Brien and Franklin have remained close. Maryland is concerned that Franklin and O'Brien may have been in contact as the player pondered his football future. I don't know if there was any contact or not.

What's this, 3 articles now on the sorry Terp football program? BTWN this and Miami SI has gone a bit ACC crazy while at the same time not talking about the 3 actual decent teams in that conference in Clemson, VT, and FSU. Wierd.

Haha... Maryland is scared of Vandy...

All Edsall is doing is delaying the inevitable...

O'Brien will have to sit a year regardless... He just have to pay his own way...

DA Coach, thats why the Terps suck...

He is graduating this spring so he can play next year.

I hate this trend....zip through college to get a "degree" you don't intend to use so you can extend your "glory days" and then end up Wal-Mart district manager and manager of your slo-pitch softball team....

February 14, 2012  09:13 AM ET

You'd have to be a jackazz to block this, but I'm pretty sure the SEC has a rule against doing this. Maybe he'll get a "waiver".

Its the only advantage a kid has... Coaches arent made to sit out a year...

I know several Wal-Mart district managers......most retire wealthy before reaching 50. Not a bad gig for the normal "collage athalete", vandy grads excluded.

It is funny that anyone would prevent a player from going to Vandy.

(Auburn tried to recruit the qb, in similar situation, who ended up at Wisconsin)

To me, it's an indication of the ass-hole factor of the coach. If the coach isn't an ass-hole, O'Brien probably sticks around...

I would envision Dools to be a bit of an ****. In truth, most head coaches probably are. You'd have to be to run a ship as large as a major college football program.

"As The CFB Turns". Makes for a great soap opera. LOL

I wish someone would take the NCAA to court over schools blocking any kids transfer to anyplace.
The NCAA would LOSE!

February 14, 2012  10:14 AM ET

I hope the kid goes to some school they say he cannot, and files a suit against the NCAA and his former school.
See how fast the rules change then.

I can understand OBrien's thought process.. 2 years w/ Ralph and Franklin, had great success...

School stoopidly brings in Edsall w/ brings Crowton(yikes) as the OC and then fires him.. Takes a 9 win team to a 2/3 win team...

I would have left as well... And I still cant believe he landed Diggs... wtf

Most Coaches have ego's.. but you have to be a **** to block a kid from going to a school not in your conference or on your schedule the next few years..

Dooley didnt have a prob ditching La Tech to go to UTk...

But at Vandy, he'll be playing behind the Rodgers kid, correct?...
