Agent: Jones torn between jobs

The agent for Hawaii Coach June Jones said late Sunday night that his client was torn between taking the head-coaching job at SMU and a third offer from the University of Hawaii. "It's been gut-wrenching," the agent, Leigh Steinberg, said. Since Jones left Hawaii on Saturday to interview for the SMU job in Dallas, there has been an outpouring of hundreds of calls and e-mail messages, saying that if Jones left it would indelibly alter the culture and tourism industry in Hawaii, Steinberg said. Hawaii's third offer includes a significant list of facilities and infrastructure updates, which Steinberg has said are critical to Jones's future at Hawaii.

No decision. Stay in Hawaii.

January 7, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Dallas or Oahu??? Never thought of that as a hard decision.

*If* UH ponies up with the facilities upgrades, assistants' pay, etc., Jones should stay in Hawai'i.

SMU will pay him double the money. They'll also give him triple the headaches, and quadruple the expectations. Three years from now, when he hasn't beaten the right teams often enough, the deep-pocketed SMU alums will kick him to the curb for the next guy.

Spaceman Spiff is right. SMU will pay, but they won't have the loyalty to him that Hawaii has.

Recruit some big O-lineman and live it up, Jones.

I think he outta get off those freakin' rocks.

SMU? The wonderful football tradition that is SMU?

I see why June has aged so much since his NFL days...how would you like living on top of a volcano?

Rumor around the camp fire is that's why Mouse Davis couldn't hack it anymore...he mumbled something about "I gotta get outta that pressure cooker" and people didn't take it for face value

I find it humorous, now even Governor Lingle is getting involved. There's nothing like the Court of Public Opinion, and I'm sure all the administration are aware of the bad publicity this has gotten all of them. Serves them right. Hawaii's local provincial petty politics can backfire sometimes, and this makes me laugh.

For example, they built Les Murakami, the baseball coach, a new stadium, but they let the football facilities decay, and when Jones calls them out on it, they react in a typical kamaaina petty defensive way. No soap in the showers??? What a disgrace.

This also has made Coach June almost legendary. He's not a sleazy money grubber like Les Miles, Rich Rodriguez or Nick Saban; his issues were about other things and people who he cares about. I'm sure he's having a tough time deciding what to do. The paper reported he was very emotional at the outpouring of love and respect from the people of Hawaii and he still hasn't signed with SMU as of this morning.

Juice Boy...Coach Rodriguez is NOT like Miles or Saban. If you recall, he turned down Alabama when WVA promised to updgrade their facilities and and pay the assistant coaches..then they didn't produce.

STOP HATE'N ON THE MONEY$$$$$$$$$$ if you were offered a few millions to do your job (what you are doing right now) but had to go to another place to do it.....YOU WOULD TAKE IT IN A HEART BEAT.......it doesnt matter.
