Yankees, Bucs in 'stare-down' mode on Burnett

08:17 AM ET 02.15 | A.J. Burnett's future remains in limbo. The proposed trade between the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh that would make [Burnett] a Pirate is close but not quite done, and there are indications that the Yankees are pressuring Pittsburgh to sweeten its offer for the beleaguered 35-year-old right-hander. According to sources on both sides of the deal who spoke to ESPNNewYork.com on the condition of anonymity, there is still optimism that a trade would be completed, perhaps as soon as this week, but there were still significant hurdles to be cleared. "We are in stare-down mode," an official with direct knowledge of the talks told ESPNNewYork.com.

Is this like the sour-puss face that AJ gives Girardi when he gets the hook?

'Sweeten the offer'???

Yankees getting greedy now?

I think "stare-down mode" in this instance goes something like this:

Yankees Brass: We want more for Burnett. He's awesome.

Pirates Brass: No and no.

Yankees Brass: <flashes stink-eye at Pirates Brass>

Pirates Brass: What are you doing?

Yankees Brass: We're in stare-down mode.

I would think the Pirates have all the leverage here.

Yeah. The guy the Pirates offered in trade doesn't drink enough beer in the dugout.

No point in Cashman moving him if it only saves $5 million a year and gets no value in return. Simple as that.

But getting "no value in return" would in fact be, getting equal value.

What do you think they're going to get in return? The guy's got a 5.20 ERA over the last two seasons.

I know if I was a GM, I wouldn't want him off my roster for any more than $5m/yr. Otherwise, he can suck in the Bronx for $16.5m.

Considering he's being paid $16.5m per and had an ERA almost a full run higher than the average American League starter, I'd say his value is negative.

So, the Yankees could get no value for him and actually be improving themselves.

Good point. Sounds like a case of the big, bad Yankees trying to butt slam the poor wittle Pirates.

Selig should step in and make sure he settles this.......by labor day

If I was the Pirates GM, I'd take Burnett provided they paid $30m of the remaining $33m on his contract and threw in a fungo bat and a case of big league chew.

I would think every NL team that needs a starter would gladly take Burnett for $5 bucks if they didnt have to give up a top prospect. A bunch of AL teams as well, certainly the Indians.

plus a few cases of shaving cream.

I hope you really meant $5 bucks and not $5 mil.... Do teams really hurt for 5+ ERA starters?

There is an almost zero chance Burnett would have a 5+ era in the National League.

These deals are never as fast as the media is hoping they would be. What is a reporter to do. Write a column on how the deal is not done yet or praise what good this would do for both teams.

In fact, if the Yankees would pay $23 of the remaining $33 and not ask for any players in return I would think at least half the teams in baseball would take that deal in a heartbeat.
