End of the Calhoun era near

08:26 AM ET 02.15 | Coming off a dream run to finish the 2010-11 season with a title, this season has become something of a nightmare for Jim Calhoun and the UConn Huskies -- and more trouble looms. The team is facing a postseason ban for 2013, imposed by the NCAA for failing to meet retention and eligibility standards for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years, measured by the association's Academic Progress Rate. The school applied for a waiver and was denied. It is appealing. Combine a ban with Calhoun's health problems and age -- he will turn 70 on May 10 -- and the inevitable surfaces: Calhoun's era, in which the school has won three national championships and 10 Big East titles, seems near its end.

IMO, Calhoun missed the bus.....should have ridden off into the sunset at the end of last year. What better way to go out......winning a NC from a dark-horse position.

APR bans, NCAA investigations, and poor health will tarnish the rep for this guy from the average fan.

Give the men's gig to Geno Auriemma. Get him away from the women.

Jimmy brought the school way up...and made some personnel issues mearkle the edge....let's give him a hand and exit the bench with class. Install Kevin Ollie as head coach and ask Geoge Blaney to hang for another season......and let it fly!

We can only hope. Coach Cal is crooked

Yup, that party is over...
Nice run though.

A true college coach. He cheats and his players don't graduate. He should go now before it all turns bad. Once they are banned (and they should be) his players will leave and his recruits will go elsewhere, if there is any justice.

Calhoun never cheated, Miles never even practiced, he was found innocent but served a suspension for his programs failure to supply - definitely his fault. But he never cheated.....Just a bitter Rutgers fan mad about a mediocre athletics program he has

All major college coaches cheat. PERIOD. some worse than others. When a coach has been at a school for decades, there will always be a drop off when he leaves, at least for a couple of years.

Calhoun was dirty...but he got away with it often enough or got only little slaps on the wrist that it was worth breaking the rules...

MIXPEEP - you must be delusional to compare Umass to UConn. Three National titles compared to Nothing. Marcus Camby chosing Umass instead of UConn is the only real success they have had.

I'm not sure if they are #1 the past couple years but for a while UConn had more players in the NBA than any other school....
They will be fine.

Kemba Walker bragged during the final 4 last yr that he hadn't read a book in 4 yrs at UConn. Any surprise their APR isn't up to standards?
