Ovechkin 'wrapped up too much' in star status

08:23 AM ET 02.16 | Caps associate goaltending coach Olie Kolzig offered an interesting take on what seems to eating Alex Ovechkin. "Alex was getting away from playing the hard, no-nonsense, honest type of hockey, exuberant hockey that he displayed the first three years that he was in the league. I think that's what endeared him to everybody. Then all of a sudden he was the same Alex, he was celebrating certain ways and what endeared him to everybody now made him look like a villain. So, I think part of it is he's feeling a little not as loved as he used to be." ... "He just has to get back to being the way he was in his younger days and maybe not get wrapped up too much in the rock star status that comes with being Alex Ovechkin."

Maybe he realized that going all out for the first 80 games...doesn't leave much for when the real season starts...once the playoffs start he'll kick it up a notch.....

His head got too big

It's hockey, not figure skating.

In three years he'll be a fifty point scorer at this rate.

and not to make excuses for him, but two points here:
1) When everything revolves around you (marketing wise) in the league, especially with no Sid, you're bound to get caught up in it too.
2) He has been carrying the team for most of his time there, so feeling like the "Big Dog" is also bound to happen
(again, not excusing, just explaining)

Even his commercials suck this year.

Oh how the mighty have fallen when the Canuckmeister turns on you! But, Alex deserves it. Lots of blame to go around but he deserves the lions share of it.

I don't know about that.
I will say that's it's a good thing for the rest of the team he isn't married to Giselle Bundchen

Point taken. ;-)

Slap,

BB showed us up again last night. Boy, that man loves beating the Pens. Hate him. ha. ha. ;)

The problem was never the coach. The problem on the Caps is those two Russians who (from what I heard) don't like to be told anything. I bet if you separate them, you see their point production go up. Maybe not. But I just hate the fact that Bruce was sacrificed cause of the Prima Donnas. Shame, really.

If Ovie had any sense of what this team needed he would relinquish his captaincy. After that, hopefully that goon Hunter had half a mind to leave it vacant for the rest of the year.

They had a couple of chances to boot To***to out of the 8th playoff spot and they sagged like one of Burkie's chins. They deserve everything they get.

I don't think he has a second gear. Maybe he is just tired from holding all of that weight for the last few years.

It's pretty pathetic that Toronto is probably going to make the playoffs for no reason other than Washington's utter ineptitude.

What makes you think anyone's asked him to? Who do you give it to? What if he actually enjoys being C and taking it from him makes it worse?

Knee-jerk reactions often lead to bigger problems than you began with.

Well, the real season doesn't start for a while yet and you're doing a lot better than a certain outfit I could name.

I've come to agree with you. Between the two of them they are taking down about $17 million a year and not putting forth much of an effort. As you know I always liked Bruce and never thought that firing him cured anything. Until the inmates quit running the asylum things will be dim in DC. Can they win with this team? Yes. Will they? Doubtful.

You're welcome DL! Will you make sure a Caps banner gets in the Leaf's Cup Parade?

It would be an epic collapse, or Washington trading for Nash or an equivalent. The East was surprisingly set in stone from pretty early this year.
