Wings, Preds had interest in Smyth

08:29 AM ET 02.16 | It appears that Ryan Smyth won't be helping a veteran club with its playoff run. [Detroit] and Nashville can't be happy. They were both hot to trot for Smyth, especially the Predators who are dying for a top six forward, especially one with net presence. Nashville likes Ales Hemsky, too, but liked Smyth more, in large part because coach Barry Trotz has a history with the Edmonton Oilers' winger from the world championship when he was a coach for Canada. The Red Wings have Tomas Holmstrom, a similar type, antagonistic player around the crease, but Homer, who just got honoured for playing 1000 NHL games, is on his last legs and is basically a fourth-line, PP guy now.

Should we be concerned that it's been over a week since the last Burke Irked piece?

at the very least, we could all be irked empathetically

He's not irked today Danny. The Laffs just beat the 29th place Oil in overtime. Obviously a sign of supreme domination.

Didn't the Oil beat the Wings in a shootout last week? EWWW couldn`t even do it in regular OT like the best team in the world did! I bet they went home and cried into their winning streak there.

They traded that point to curry favour for a Ryan Smyth trade? :-)

Hahaha

Is that something you'd be interested in? How bout Hemsky? I'm just not sure of eithers' worth or what Big Red would give up for either

Had? Yay!!!!

Smyth would be nothing but 4th line for the Wings. Even if Holmstrom leaves this summer, Detroit always seems to find a diamond in the rough.

It's either Burke's irked or the Babcock smirk.

If anything, with Lindstrom and Stuart thinking of leaving, Holland will look for D men like Suter or (and) Weber, rather than some player gone after June.

I could see this summer be a real re-tooling year for Detroit. And even with that, I could still see them taking the Cup home both this year and next.

I agree that the focus in the D should be on defense - even if Lidstrom and Stuart stay for another year. The year an able D-man would spend learning from the likes of L & S would be time well spent for both the club and the player.

As a WingNut, I hope for Cups both this year and next. But let us not forget that the Wings are not the only team in the league. They haven't shown a lot of playoff ability the last couple of years despite very good regular seasons.

Smyth is going nowhere , Hemsky is. The question is anyone silly enough to give Hemsky the long term deal he wants

yeah I agree...we got a bunch of writers and others touting them as finals bound if not the cup...and as much as I'd love to see it...I'm still a realist... there's a LOT of ground to cover before Nick gets a shot at hoisting that cup again. I'll believe it when they're 3 goals up in the final game with a minute to play...then and only then will it be time to celebrate
