Mayweather facing Lin backlash

09:12 AM ET 02.18 | When Floyd Mayweather holds his press conference in New York later this month to announce his upcoming fight, he should be wary of any Jeremy Lin fans in attendance. That might include Spike Lee or Chris Rock or any of the Knicks faithful, who didn't appreciate @FloydMayweather tweeting of Lin, "all the hype is because he's Asian." The backlash from that and subsequent tweets aimed at defending his point has prompted some unexpected sparring for Mayweather. He insisted his cause was noble. "I'm speaking my mind in behalf of other NBA players. They're programmed to be politically correct and will be penalized if they speak up," he tweeted.

He's right to an extent....but Lin had been straight ballin' until last night....if you come outta nowhere and play like that you will get noticed regardless of skin color

I'm going to respectfully disagree with you Bro. In truth, your comment actually makes the point that refutes what Floyd said...

"...if you come outta nowhere and play like that you will get noticed regardless of skin color.

Likewise, as I said in another forum, this subject was once brought up by Isiah Thomas in regards to Larry Bird. The thing is, Larry Bird just happened to be that good and no player that wasn't named Earvin "Magic" Johnson was playing as well as Bird, night in and night out." Again, regardless of color.

The simple fact is what Floyd said was patently stupid, short-sighted, unwarranted and bigoted. Maybe we should be focusing on the idea that perhaps the young man is reaping the rewards for the work he put in while he wasn't playing. Maybe this is simply a case of "Skill set meets opportunity". Whatever the case, nothing should diminish Jeremy Lin's accomplishments... Especially his race.

{addendum to my last comment}

I also don't remember Magic Johnson suffering from a lack of exposure due to Bird's accomplishments.

WOW!!! In 2012, I see racism is alive and well. Headlines like, "The Knicks Good Fortune" and "A **** in the Armor" don't garner as much attention as Mayweather's tweets. Shame on y'all, you KNOW who you are...HA!

Floyd isn't exactly the most educated man on the planet. Ironic that he is criticizing a Harvard lad.

You must have been living under a rock because those offensive headlines received national attention on TV and radio. In fact, the men responsible for those headlines were fired. Last time I checked Mayweather is still being paid millions to fight.
