10:27 AM ET 02.18 | Now that Tim Wakefield has chosen retirement, could Jason Varitek be far behind? In a phone interview yesterday, agent Scott Boras said Varitek "is in a position where he's ready to play" this season. But Boras added that the longtime Red Sox catcher, who has been offered a minor league contract to attend spring training with only a slim chance of making the team, "had not made any decisions." And with pitchers and catchers required to report to camp tomorrow, general manager Ben Cherington said he isn't anticipating any additions to the roster.

Time to hang up the spikes, Tek....you punched A-Rod so your life is complete

If he doesn't show up no one but the media will take any notice.

As a life long Yankee fan, still sad to see Wakefield and Varitek move on, but time marches on. I always felt they were two of the more professional baseball players. Wakefield always gave the Yankees fits, he had a few memorable lapses, but that is the life of a knuckelballer. Tek was a royal pain, but a true competitor, who got a lot more out of the Red Sox staff than others. The nation will miss both, good luck to both.

Follow Wake.

It's time for Scott Boras to do his job. Sit Jason down and tell him the truth. It's over, you had a great career, but it's over. Instead all this blood sucking parasite cares about is trying to squeeze out one more years commission.

Perfect scenario is having a Tim Wakfield and Jason Varitek day at the home opener. Let the fans have a chance to say goodbye and thank you to two really special players in Red Sox history.

Seems like they already have just contemplating whether he will or not.

Yup...and no doubt who should throw and catch the first pitch. One more time.

It's 9 Years Since Gary Carter was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and the Mets have yet to retire his number, like they have a multitude of HOF Players. Be sure they will have a Gary Carter day this year, but not to honor Gary but to fill up the park so that they can make money on him!
God Bless Gary Carter, I don't think he's going to bless them!

Well said. We Sox fans will always remember both of these guys as true professionals.

I agree with JNorman and you. Watching them team up for a ceremonial first pitch would be cool as hell. It would be even better if Wake tossed in one of butterfly specials and had Varitek diving all over the place to catch it..................just for old time's sake ;)

Retire.
