10:41 AM ET 02.18 | Lee Corso, Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit, the crew from ESPN's College GameDay, served as hosts of the Doak Walker Award banquet yet again and didn't disappoint in delivering candid, wide-ranging opinions on college football. On Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert's transferring to SMU, Corso said Gilbert will get "probably better coaching" under SMU coach June Jones, to loud applause -- and a little shock in the ballroom.

Guido, your numbers may be correct if this is true.

Doesn't/didn't the Longhorns have a QB coach???

Just a hunch. Jones is a better QB developer, the offense will be closer to what he ran in HS, and I think GG will flourish playing in 30k seat stadiums as opposed to the 100k.

Yeah, his name was Greg Davis and he retired in 2010. The one they have now couldn't tote Greg's jock strap if he tried.
Gilbert will get better QB coaching at SMU because of Dan Morrison who developed Colt Brennan, Timmy Chang, Kyle Padron and others.
It will also help that SMU plays in the WAC.

He's probably not an ex NFL QB though.

There is a difference between getting better coaching or just having better stats? Chang and Brennan threw the ball 100 times so if Gilbert follows suit he might be statistically superior to his Texas days but not really a better qb.

Doc thanks for the info. I knew their must of had a good QB coach prior to 2010, as Colt and Vince were damn good college QBs.

Doc, give Harsin a little time. If Ash doesn't show growth this year, give it both barrels. Remember, GG had 2 years under Davis and 8 weeks with Harsin.

One might argue that Vince wasn't real effective until he was able to freestyle and ignore the established offense and that Colt had his dad as his QB coach.

Jones has a teaching style that will work with GG. Big difference between his guys at Hawaii and GG. He has the size and arm strength. Just needs to get it together between the ears.

Corso is an idiot & his only purpose in life is to clown around for the camera. Whether it's true or not.....who knows. Jones may be better at coaching passing QB's.
Having corso say it is = to Mariah Carey saying the deficit and reduction or GNP is hampering the future of America. May be true, but what the hell does she know

Yes ... but Chang and Brennan had stellar passing efficiency stats to go along with the yardage. Same for Robinson and Rolovich. You still have to line up and execute in your system and they did - but they didn't throw a bunch of bumbling interceptions resulting from bad decisions.
Morrison teaches the run-and-shoot and it should be a good fit for Gilbert's skills. Gilbert's downfall at TX was his decision-making. He relied on his superior arm to bail him out of tight spots when our crappy O line broke down every other play ... but his decision making was just not where it should have been and that can be attributed to coaching at this stage in his development. He will get better coaching at SMU under Morrison..

This is why I never watch ESPN for the commentary. Only for the games.

King, you going to the baseball game this afternoon? How about basketball? Florida should be a good match-up at home.
Good day to be @ Arky

Same here, and I watch the games on ESPN3.com which also helps. You don't get the in-game distractions between every down and at timeouts. They show the same broadcast as on cable but without all the distracting hype between downs,

Yeah I know I've been very critical of Harsin. You probably need to keep telling me this.

Retired? I got the impression that MB allowed him to retire rather than fire him. If that was the case, wasn't Davis the OC when Texas played in two NC games? Strange how Davis gets let go after a bad season.

Yes Davis was the OC ... and he performed miracles with a grand total of 2 players with D1 talent (McCoy and Shipley) who figured out how to execute. He was also on the path to retirement and it showed in recruiting efforts. He developed a man-crush on Gilbert, the local kid, and didn't recruit another QB.
His O line coach was also on the path to retirement and was mailing it in for several years with regards to recruiting. Local kids looked good to him too and it showed in on-field performance.
S&C coach was interested in new age paradigm shift crap that didn't translate to the hand-to-hand combat necessary to play in the trenches. It showed.
As a result O line play sucked, we had no QB depth and no running game to take up the slack because ... O line play sucked.
Yes Mack allowed Davis & McWhorter to retire and he replaced the S&C coach.
