09:22 AM ET 02.19 | The Cubs don't know what their roster's going to look like two or three years from now. But they know where they want to start. And it's the same way they figure to start their opener this season: with Matt Garza. After exploring Garza's trade value this winter -- then narrowly avoiding salary arbitration -- the Cubs say they plan to start talks this spring on a possible long-term deal for their top pitcher.

Garza is the one really good trade chip the Cubs have, besides Castro, and could bring a decent haul back to Wrigley. Either way, this team will finish in the bottom half of the Central, probably ahead of only the Astros.

And, the Astros probably have better starting pitching than the Cubs, so that one is a toss-up.

the astros aren't that good either, but in this season there are going to be too many surprises nevertheless, the cubs are trying to emulate the rays style as how to replete their minor system, the cubs are expecting to work with their budget below 30 millions per season!!!

the cubs should just hold onto garza in reality the cubies have very little to offer, unless they could eat the whole salary from soriano other than that, the team its weaker than any other team!!!

When you over price a player, nobody wants to trade!

tis ok ... Bud is gonna' force the cubbies to send him to the RedSox in compensation for Theo ...

or has that been resolved ???

Hmmm, keep the only decent starter on your very weak pitching staff OR
trade the only player that's in demand for much needed rebuilding pieces.
Such a dilemma for Theo the boy wonder!

So, why did all of the Cub haters come and comment on this post this morning? The Cubs will be fine. We'll finish ahead of the Astros and Pirates, behind the other three this year (but closer than the rest of you are giving the Cubbies credit for), and with the influx of youth that's right around the corner (Rizzo, Jackson, Vitters, etc.) we'll take over this division in a year or two. Keep Garza, sign a new pitcher next year, bring up a pitcher or two during the season. It's all a process. The Cubs pared their payroll rather effectively (Only Dempster and Soriano are left of the big, bad contracts), which means there will be money to spend on the North Side when the time is right.

Wish-list for Free Agency 2013
a number 2 SP
a 2B
a 1 way ticket to anywhere but Chicago for Soriano

Ahead of the Astros maybe, ahead of the Pirates? Wishful thinking! That's the Old Style talking. Garza will be worth MUCH MORE at the trade deadline barring injury.
