Playoff format losing steam, 'Plus One' gaining

08:18 AM ET 02.22 | Though not quite a crystal ball, the NCAA does have a roadmap to a revamped championship format. The Plus One model -- four teams and three games to determine a college football national champion -- is becoming the preferred route of BCS administrators, multiple sources told Sporting News. That means an 8- or 16-team playoff is likely dead. "Not even on the radar," said one BCS source. The Plus One, however, is now front and center. The process of winnowing multiple concepts for the college football postseason into a few workable solutions still has numerous obstacles. ... [The most pressing problem] is protecting the sport's linchpin regular season and not encroaching on the academic calendar.

The method used to determine the four "deserving" teams is where the fight will start.

I thought they decided. 3 Sec teams and whoever else is ranked highest in BCS for the 4th slot!

Sounds like the end of the College World Series last year.

Is it the top 4 teams in the BCS rankings or the top 4 "Conference Champs"?

I bet the majority will say it should be the top 4 Conference Champs in the hopes that only one SEC team will be in.

I'll just laugh when Oregon, USC, tOSU and Michigan are the top 4 teams in the BCS rankings, but due to the outcry this year, the #7 SEC team and #9 Big12 team are put in as the 3rd and 4th team for the playoff.

Everyone tries to make the rules for what happened this year and will burn themselves in the end...

This is exactly the reason the AQ conferences were "designated" in the first place.

Ha! Probably has crossed their minds...

But really, any form of a playoff, be it 4 or 8 or 16, would be an improvement over the crap they've put out in the BS, I mean BcS.

no one really knows because teams that deserve a shot never get one.

I'll keep pushing for an 8-team playoff to cast a wider net for a possible champion.

Any playoff has to be better than the old system.

Oh I forgot about the old money angle.

Contrary to popular belief, I do believe the TWO best teams played for the title this year regardless of conference affiliation. There will be years in the future the SEC will whine because another conference may have the TWO best teams, yes folks it has happened in the past and will in the future, dominance is a cycle and national titles are sometimes won on the simplest things called luck, good fortune and lack of injuries!

Maybe it should come down to who's cheerleaders show the most skin.

Be careful, what you ask for? Aggies ruin everything.
