Would Caps consider moving Semin?

08:26 AM ET 02.22 | A new coach certainly didn't do the trick in Washington. If there was any doubt before, there should be none now. It's always been about the players. From the outside, there doesn't appear to be a strong leader in the Capitals' dressing room. Players used words like "embarrassing" after Monday's defeat. But what was said in the room before the game? ... If rebooting is the route [George McPhee] chooses, other team's draft picks, prospects and young players are available. Why wait until the offseason? It just might take some gutsy decisions. For example: Alexander Semin, whose contract expires at season's end, is underachieving and should be dealt if he doesn't fit into the future plans.

Should be dealt? Is that a maybe? Would love to know Caps' fans opinions, but I think he and Ovie = a cancer on this team regarding attitude. Split them up, and hopefully things change.

agree. I am surprised Semin has stuck around this long to be honest. but the fact he sandbags plays, and couldnt find the D zone if he fell into it kind of hurts his value.

I guess the better question would be "Why would Washington consider keeping Semin?"

February 22, 2012  09:28 AM ET

As a Caps fan I'll say this. There are several problems. Bruce needed to go after last year's failure in the playoffs. He's a great guy but the team went as far as it was going to go with him at the helm. That said, I've yet to be impressed with Dale Hunter. The team is so boring its painful to watch.

The Alex's need to broken up. Semin doesn't care and Ovie seems to be indifferent right now. Dealing Semin might get Ovie's attention and in return get some heart and soul guys back on the team. Letting Matt Bradley go was a HUGE mistake by McPhee. Another mistake by McPhee was signing Vokoun. Why was he signed when you have Neuvirth and Holtby ready to go this year? Just because he's cheap is not an excuse to mess up the confidence of your young goaltenders.

Also, you have the injuries. Green is brittle and has been badly missed. Backstrom took a cheap shot and hasn't been back since and his loss has been glaring.

I don't know what Ted and George do going forward but after so much excitement the team has taken a dramatic step backwards this season.

Bingo! Also a new captain...........probably Laich since I doubt Knuble will be there next year. Ovie is simply too immature to be captain. He has bazillions of dollars worth of ability and about .98 cents worth of leadership as it impacts motivating the rest of the team. I think he's been sulking for most of the last 1 and 1/2 seasons. Ashamed of themselves? They should be. Embarrassed? Oh yeah. Are they? Most of them probably..........not.

Well, you are being realistic about everything. Unfortunately, there has been a rash of cheap shots causing injuries to key players and just about every team out there is missing players because of it.

As far as Semin goes, Washington could only hope to get a 2nd round pick or that sort given it's a rental player with a horrible rep, big contract for this year, and a ton of talent. I'd be surprised if anyone besides Brian Burke, (being irked of course), would trade a warm body for him at this point. Maybe even a 2nd round would be high for Semin now.

The window of opportunity for this team in its current state has closed in my opinion. The team needs more heart. Trade Semin to a team looking for scoring and get whatever you can for him. Take the C off 8's sweater. Those two moves are where i'd start, but certainly not where i'd finish.

If a team is going into the post season and is looking for more scoring, they would pick up Semin. He's a cherry picker with no heart, but he can score. If you put him in a role where he can excel at what he does and don't ask more, then you can be successful with him.

The problem in Washington is, imo, they are sorely lacking grit and heart. Semin is going to provide those qualities. But if a team out there already has them, then he can do his thing and rack up some points.

That pretty quick Canuck! Lol.....getting rid of Semin would be a good thing for both parties.

And it looks like one of the players that Washington may trade is Knuble, a grit and soul player.

I'm really lost on what they are thinking. Personally, I'd love to see Knuble back in Boston, he could play the Recchi role.

Semin won't fetch what the Caps will want for him. He has a reputation around the NHL for wilting in the playoffs and is not a leader in the dressing room. The Caps aren't going to find the market exactly drooling for his services.

I thought giving Ovie the C was a mistake from day one. He is not a team first guy. He has more talent then almost everybody else in the NHL, but he worries about Ovie first and his teammates second.

The Caps are lucky that they play in a weak division. At 2 points out, they are still very much in the hunt to win it. If you were to pull the Islanders out of the Atlantic and plug in the Caps, they'd just replace them in last and be 18 points out with the Rangers holding a game in hand. The Caps neeed a Mike Keenan type coach that will put a boot up Ovie's **** and leave it there until he stops playing like a little beeyotch. Hunter was a great player for the Caps and showed a lot of promise in the minors as a coach, but I don't think he's the guy to straighten out the Caps. They've bought into too much of their own hype.
