08:04 AM ET 02.24 | Lovie Smith, who hadn't talked publicly for nearly two months, seemed to make up for lost time. [A] question related to stopping Calvin Johnson but, interestingly, Smith expanded his answer to detail how athletic, physical receivers in Johnson's mold "goes along with what teams are doing now." Teams other than the Bears, that is. ... If the Chargers allow 6-foot-5 wide receiver Vincent Jackson to enter free agency -- reports Thursday indicated they still are considering the franchise tag -- somebody will overpay for the 29-year-old difference-maker. As Smith implied in his enthusiastic analysis of big wide receivers, the Bears with roughly $25 million of salary-cap space have as good of a reason as any team.

Aren't the Bears more worried about how far they are under the minimum, rather than the cap?

There's plenty of WR talent available in the draft. Why pay so much money to a one trick pony?

WR is the missing ingredient. Before cutler went down, the Bears were a possible play off team.

When the Pats played the Chargers last year, VJax was the only weapon San Diego had. How stupid do you thing the Chargers front office is?
Oh, yeah. This is the team that let Sproles get away, isn't it? Never mind.

A good point... but the Bears do need a strong +1 wide-out, and with the new cap rules in place, they pretty much have no reason not to spend the $$$$.

It all does make sense, for both VJax and the Bears. With a salary floor in place, it actually helps the Bears to overpay for players.
