09:10 AM ET 02.24 | Alfonso Soriano has a habit that tends to rub Cubs fans the wrong way. How many times over the years have fans seen Soriano forced to stop at first or hustle his way into second after watching the flight of the ball? ... Former Cubs managers Lou Piniella and Mike Quade couldn't change Soriano and didn't really try. Can [Dale Sveum] break that habit? "Yeah, you talk about it," he said. "And hopefully in that spur of the moment he thinks about maybe something I said. But that's not always the case. A lot of things are tougher than just talking about it." Former Cubs manager Dusty Baker was in a similar situation in spring training in 2003, constantly asked to change the habits of controversial slugger Sammy Sosa.

I can remember the day Chi-Town North signed Soriano, it was excitement with a capital 'E'!!! My Son and I called each other to discuss the acquisition, talking about what impact he would have on the other guys in clubhouse, how big his bat was( lol) and how many World Series titles the Cubs were due for. Boy has that time come and gone!!! Trying to figure out why we are even trying with this tool?!? Look at the Yankmees and what they did - eat a good chunk of the contract and ship him to Arte in LA or to Ozzie in Florid, er ... Miami ;)

Sveum has also sworn to break his bad habits defensively and promises to have him crashing into the vines making snow cone catches

Soriano did quite well the first 2 years of his contract when they won the division both years, but it was the final 6 years of his contract that was the killer

No, no he can't break him of any habitts. That is why the Yankees got rid of him. Good raw talent, got screwed by the MLB service system, took his money when he could. he won't change, i don't think he can.

not sure the yanks got rid of him because of his bad habits. offensively he was very productive for the yanks. it probably had more to do with bringing Arod to the bronx and having robbie cano on the farm

it had to do with bad habbits, articularly lack of plate discipline which manifest themselves in his poor avg in the playoffs the year prior to them trading him. he has other bad habits, but that in particular got him traded. arod was a bonus at the time and a no brainer with the Rangers picking up 10 mill per year on the contract.

I dont know....no question his plate discipline has always been horrible but nevertheless produced great offensive numbers.
by the way, I remember he did hit poorly in the alcs in 03 but hit well in the divisional series against the the Twins and he also had a couple other decent playoff series in pinstripes. The rangers wanted to unload arod while gaining who they thought would replace some of the the run production that was leaving.

The main problem is that Soriano just doesn't care.

I think you're right. How do you break the habit of just not giving a damn?
