Most likely playoff format for 2014

???I hope we can come up with a system that turns the bowl model on its head and improves it,??? Scott said.

The bowls have been controlling long enough!

I agree with this:

"Scott said another concern of provosts, presidents and athletic directors is having college football's postseason fit in better with the academic calendar and end closer to Jan 1. They strongly disapprove of the postseason's creeping into the second week in January, especially because many Pac-12 schools start classes a week earlier."

Integrity of the regular season? A couple observations:

- 2-loss LSU, including losing its last regular season game, is given a slot in the NCG in 2007.
- Alabama, which lost to LSU in the regular season, is given a rematch in, and wins, the NCG in 2011.

How is the regular season still consider sacrosanct? Plus how often are division races wrapped up a couple weeks ahead of time, giving teams that want to make the playoff the ability to stop focusing on regular season games and turn their attentions to the CCGs? And a strict CCG playoff would allow teams with 3, 4, 5 losses to make the playoff while leaving some 1-loss teams out in the cold. Then people would complain again about how the system is not working.

CCGs and playoffs may not be the best mix. Honestly CCGs might need to go or they might need to redefine how teams make the CCGs. No reason a team that loses 3+ games, mostly OOC, should be allowed into the playoffs just because it won its conf. Especially not if a team with a better overall record and resume is left out because it lost its one game at the wrong time (possibly due to an injury to a star QB or something) and therefore was not even able to play in its CCG.

In 2011 should Bama have made a playoff or 10-3 Clemson? See how the sanctity of the regular season is at odds with using the CCGs to determine playoff participants? Do they plan to have a variable playoff that shrinks or stretches from 2 to 4 teams depending on how many qualified conf champs there are?

"To keep the integrity of the regular season and the conference championship games, Kramer said, all of the teams in the playoff should be conference champions."

And that will be the next source of outrage when the first playoffs happen. The best 4 teams, regardless of conference, should be in the playoffs otherwise it's still a sham.

4 best teams by WHOSE criteria then?

I'm sure most of us would have our own criteria for those 4 teams. LOL

People are gonna beotch no matter what playoff scenario is put into place.

4 best teams that aren't Boise or TCU or any other non-BCS hack. You know, elite teams like the Big East or ACC champion (or 2-loss Notre Dame).

Hey now, Sandy. TCU will be playing in the Big 12 this year so you can take us out of your non-BCS hack catagory. LOL

Now, if we can still field a team that can continue the string of 4 straight 11 or more wins we just might be in the hunt.

Yeah, Arizona State, Old Miss, Minnesota and Kansas are worthy hacks just because of league association.

Looks like just another BSC type alternative to keep the smaller schools from being able to challenge the established conference teams, and upset their $ applecart. Shame on the NCAA for keeping teams like Boise State, and TCU on the championship sidelines. Boise's win over Oklahoma a few years must have scared the heck out of the ruling NCAA bigwigs!

all conferences should consider crowning a champion via a conference championship game. all independents should consider joining a conference (i.e. notre dame.). when it's all said and done the top 4 rated teams would go to the playoff.

Too obvious for the decision makers. Delamey will insist that the Adipose 12 champ ALWAYS be in the mix.

of course the fly in the ointment here is if the undefeated #1 team in the country loses it's conference championship game and remains in the top 4. hmmmmmm......

Larry's a homer for the PAC, and has calculated to odds that his conference champ will be among the top 4 rated while the "resonating" system lasts.

Yeah....some people are going to complain no matter what, but are you supporting the condition that each team be a conference champion?

Ideally, I'd like to see 8 teams in a playoff as there would be little question that the teams deserving of consideration for the championship would be outside that group. I'd be happy with 4 though.

Top 4 is plenty for the next few years. The season will matter and being a conference champion will take care of the important thing...building a winning program to compete in the conference you belong.

Now if the SEC wins another 7, then so be it. If Pac-12 wins 7 straight, then they are the new SEC.

Just end the season prior to January 3rd...please. The Orange Bowl has lost money since it moved its game from Jan 1 to Jan 5th...

BTW, no one goes to March Madness games....so do not compare football to basketball again....waste of time and effort. If I am wrong, someone tell me what the "purse" in winning a #1 vs. #64 game is in basketball played in Greensboro, NC??? If it is anywhere near the Rose Bowl payout???
