Sveum already critical of Castro

08:31 AM ET 02.27 | It didn't take the Cubs' new manager long to not like what he was seeing. The first day [Dale Sveum] got a look at his kid shortstop in the field, he told Starlin Castro not to wait on ground balls. By Sunday, the instruction was about Castro's shoulders, head movement and picking up his target quicker. The full squad has been together for only three days. At this rate, Sveum might be hoarse by Monday. As Sveum said on the first day, "It's a work in progress. There's a lot of things I saw that he definitely needs to work on." That has been the story of Castro's defense for his nearly two-year career. Defense also has been the Cubs' Achilles heel for much of the last decade. Consequently, it's one of Sveum's biggest focal points.

I might add here that no one expected anything from that '84 team - you add just one piece, like the Cubs did with Rick Sutcliffe, and everything changes :] As a Cubs fan I am most certainly an eternal optimist so my cup is always half-full, when it comes to the Cubs ... it has to be or would have been driven insane by now, with all this curse nonsense lol

I think the Cubs should try having Chad Fox pitch again this year.

Lets just do what we need to do to make the Cubbies prominant and respectful again. I am dying to get us back to playoff form and if that means trading Starlin to get a better piece, than that is what needs to be done. If Cubs can focus on another SP and another bat........ We might be interesting this year...... What's wrong with making a run at Oswalt...... Garland (who just got released by CLE)??? Regardless of how frustrated I get, GOTTA LOVE THEM CUBBIES!!!!! LETS TURN THIS AROUND THEO!!!!"

You think to get better, to get to 'playoff form,' Epstein should trade your best player who is incredibly young and very cheap at the moment?

castro will have a great instructoc in his new manager, the baseline its, diffense offense and to have great concentraction in the game, that would be the only way this player can develop better skills higher performs at the major league level!!!

what you should do if you have the ballz to do it, is play your best players and sit those that don't want to change no matter how big the salary is hanging around your (their) neck...if they want to play, tell them to work to get better, or sit the bench, or re-negotiate your salary so you are tradeable (is that a word?)...

At least the Cubs finally have a manager who will put importance on attention to detail.
Starlin is one of the Cubs only bright spots and Dale will not let him get complacent with his success...that is a good thing because when you are the best player on a team that is really easy to do.

I agree with you. I would guess that Sveum is going to be really good for Castro.

+2, because that is exactly what the Cubs need.
That, and a lot more talent.

It is just frustrating that past regimes have done such a bad job. Not only at spending money on the major league level but also drafting competent minor leaguers. It will not be a over-night fix. I am glad they did not sign Fielder since the Cubs really are not even close yet.
There will be at least 2 seasons of pain before they should sign FA's that can help the team significantly. But I have faith that Theo will do a good job

It could end up being another ultra long season for the teams on the North and South side of Chicago.
