08:11 AM ET 02.28 | The Tigers remain on the prowl for starting pitchers this spring. [Assistant general manager] Al Avila confirmed early Monday that the Tigers will scout starting pitchers at other spring training facilities in the upcoming weeks. "We'll be looking at other pitchers in other camps throughout spring training to see if there's anything that makes sense for us," Avila said. Avila's comments echo statements made by general manager Dave Dombrowski in early January suggesting the club could sign a veteran pitcher to a minor league contract with an invite to big league camp. Avila said the team is pleased with the quality of internal fifth-starter candidates and will continue to evaluate and monitor their progress.

Baseball Rule #1 You can't have too much good pitching. Baseball Rule #2 When in doubt, see Rule #1. If the Tigers are going to beat the Yankees, Rays, Angels and Rangers (in no particular order), they need a surplus of good pitching.

It all depends on how the kids look in the spring, especially Jacob Turner. Most prospect rankings have him pegged around 20th in baseball and project him as a future ace. I would rather they bring him up in June so his arb clock doesn't start until 2013, but the Tigers have never been patient with young talented arms....at least not recently (Porcello, Verlander, Bonderman, etc.)

Detroit offered Oswalt $10 million, but that was before they signed Fielder. After they signed Prince, they pulled the offer from the table.

right. they're all in at this point. why not spend on one of the few available potential difference makers? perhaps this says that his health really is concerning.

Agreed. One year. The comment made about rushing pitchers is absolutely on point. Turner needs another year, and I'm not sold on Oliver or Smyly just yet. Just imagine last year's rotation, subtract Penny and add Oswalt. Penny for a dollah.

Might be better off cycling through the best prospect at the time. give them some big league experience. Oswalt would be an injury risk and you might end up paying him and doing the same thing anyway.

The Detroit Tigers will allow for their top prospects to prove themselves, with Jacob Turner getting the best opportunity to earn the role as the 5th starter. The Tigers won't make any moves to sign a free agent starting pitcher in 2012, although if Turner fails, watch out for the trading deadline. The Tigers are favored to win the World Series this year and will not hesitate to grab a proven starter from another team in July.
