08:18 AM ET 02.28 | Brian Kelly remains confident that Notre Dame signee Davonte Neal will wind up in South Bend. It's just that Neal is evidently taking one unexpected, additional stop before he does. Neal, a four-star recruit who decided to join the Irish three weeks after national signing day, reportedly withdrew from his high school Monday and will finish his academic career elsewhere. The football coach and athletic director at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Chaparral High School confirmed Neal's move to the Arizona Republic. AD Sam Messina told the paper: "It's a personal thing." Kelly, meanwhile, did not sound alarms Monday -- but he also sounded like he was in search of some clarity as well. "I can't give you the update right now," the Irish coach said.

FJJ, you called this one exactly right. You are prophetic.

Now, give me the winning lottery numbers for Wednesday night!

Sounds like this kid is going to be a solid recruit.

Just wait till the domer homers get ahold of him. He'll be eligable for sainthood in a/b 6 months. Notra Dame doesn't compromise their integrity to win football games, remember?

So glad the Hogs didn't get this guy. Sure sounds like he is nothing but trouble.

As FJJ pointed out, there had to be a reason his own QB in HS didn't want him to be recruited at UTx.

Agree.....even though he is a freak on the football field, this kid screams baggage.

I just see a kid like this moving from the desert of AZ to N Indiana having some serious adjustment issues. add to that the spotlight of playing for ND, and I'm afraid he's getting set up to fail.

Sounds like this kid is anything but ready for the academic requirements in Domerland. Do any of you Domers know whether this kid was academically eligible BEFORE he dropped out of school for his senior year? I'd say he is likely a GED candidate... not the stuff that gets you into Notre Dame. Well, maybe... does Kelly have the one-student per year allocation for non qualitfied student-athletes?

February 28, 2012  11:31 AM ET

You know Domers, I was thinking (dangerous thing this time in the morning). You guys could have avoided all the disappointment of the Willingham, Weis and Kelly years had you just ignored that little resume typos and kept the fine Irishman George O'Leary as head football coach! Do you think TD Jesus cares about a resume? No, he just wants to win football games!

February 28, 2012  11:56 AM ET

Kelly is confident he will graduate because he is sending him to a private charter school with no final exams.

February 28, 2012  12:11 PM ET

"he's going to have his academics taken care of"...kelly.
Hmmmm. Maybe a nice private Catholic school will take him now and just give him credit for the classes the other kids took there.
sure, that works.

February 28, 2012  12:31 PM ET

a four-star recruit who probably can't count to 4.

Ah, now I remember why I left this site. I come back after a month hiatus or so and still the same crap..Stimulating... If you live in AZ, you would know highschool changing is as normal as drinking water. It's done frequently. Apparently, Neal was getting harrassed and wanted to get away from all that. He's now enrolled at another highschool as I type. For the academics part of it, Neal will be fine. Kelly has stated this much. As for scewing grades so Neal can get him in. ND isn't the SEC or Ohio St, they don't just let anybody in. Go ask Randy Moss that question or Anthony Standifer or David Perkins(at OSU) of this year's 2012 recruiting class. They didn't have the requirements and wanted to still go to ND. So, yes, ethics is still at ND. If ND did allow this, I think they would be competing for NC's every year, which they haven't. Until somebody has given factual knowledge that this kid is a bad seed(not for changing schools) then I would suggest to ease off the kid until then.

A star football player getting bullied. Sure, it happens all the time. cheerleaders and kids in the band are notorious for that sort of thing.
Who knows why he quit one place and needs to go to another. Most schools are like ND. 90%+. They play by the rules ( which are not that hard to bend ), and that is that.
