Did Hodgson want out?

08:20 AM ET 02.28 | Was there more than meets the eye to the deadline deal that sent Cody Hodgson to Buffalo? Did Hodgson ask to be traded? Was this more than just too much depth in the middle and did an uneasy relationship with coach Alain Vigneault, who publicly stated the centre used a back injury to cover up a poor 2009 camp, come into play? And did Hodgson's father or agent do the lobbying? As much as [Mike Gillis] believes his team is better prepared to travel a rocky road back to the Cup final ... where the secondary scoring is going to come from to replace Hodgson's 16 goals and 33 points was a secondary question. The first was did the 22-year-old rookie want out? "That's an internal thing and I'm not going to comment," said Gillis.

How bad can it be that you want to leave a team that'll at least;
a) get to the playoffs for sure (and flame out at some point)
b) is in, from what I have been told, a beautiful city

To go to....Buffalo? (which I have been in, before anyone says anything) A pretty dysfunctional group themselves

They pulled the trigger to get Kassian so they dont get rag dolled in the playoffs again.

Oh, I've been to Buffalo quite a bit as well, spent a lot of time working there last year.

I used to flee to Niagara Falls ONT on a regular basis. It got to the point where I'd stay in a hotel in Canada and go across the border every morning.

Except Kassian isn't NHL ready and can't play on the ice with the Sedin divers.

Plus, he wouldn't have been able to stop this as well.

I suppose because he's from Toronto, it was nice being so close to home without actually having to play for their team...But yeah, Buffalo. Just an awful, awful place.

It's New York's answer to Detroit.

North Buffalo is a ghost town at this point.

Hodgson heard Howard, didn't want to be one of the idiots and asked for a trade.

Who cares ?

Their downtown is as well. And the hotels...good lord.

That's where I was working. At least I had easy access to the Peace Bridge and didn't have to get on I-190 to get to it.

A few weeks ago there was a Vancouver journo on TSN Radio and he stated pretty convincingly that Hodgson and Vigneault simply did not get along, and that the likely scenario was waiting til summer to see if either Vigneault would be fired (ie: Van doesn't win the Cup), or if Hodgson would be dealt.

IMO, Van got fleeced here. But I guess people will say they need a Kassian-type because they're a bunch of nancies so who knows.

I can't confirm that Elaine didn't like Cody but here's his reaction when he heard Gillis off loaded him.

If he ASKED to go to Buffalo....too late

Vancouver is stupid. They probably could have got Kassian for a lot less.

Hodgson is gonna be a really good player. Stupidest trade of the day.

And I fully agree, Buffalo is a crappy city. I'd rank it #3 for crappiest cities in North America behind Detroit, and Windsor. Winnipeg or Regina are both even better!

He should have demanded a trade to Toronto!

Better to be traded to a crap city than a crap team.

February 28, 2012  10:29 AM ET

Well, I like the trade.

Sorry, I've been to all 3. My rankings.

1. Detroit
2. Buffalo
3. Windsor

I used Windsor to flee Detroit after I was robbed there, so going from Hell to Purgatory may be clouding my judgment.

I'm trying to figure out what avatar you are going to have for the playoffs.....

I'm sure you applauded the move.
