Among Welker's options: A stare-down with Pats

08:54 AM ET 02.28 | The Patriots are likely to franchise Wes Welker, leaving him with a few options. If Welker signs, he gives up the only leverage he has: withholding his services throughout the offseason, training camp and, perhaps, into the regular season. That's the route guard Logan Mankins took in 2010. There's one big difference, however: Mankins had to report to the team by the middle of the season to get credited with another season toward unrestricted free agency. Welker is already there, so the only motivation to show up for the season would be monetary. That would set the course for a stare-down between Welker, the league's leading pass catcher last season, and the team.

Or we could remind him what it is like to have a Dolphins Quarterback throwing him the ball vs Tom Brady

"so the only motivation to show up for the season would be monetary."

So, they DON'T come out for love of the game and healthy competition?

Look at Welker. Look at his eyes. Look at his intensity.

Nobody does that just for the money.

He's a little guy from Texas Tech. He wasn't drafted. The Chargers gave up on him. The Dolphins kind of did, too. And then he found a home with the Patriots. I'm guessing he wants to stay, and I'm guessing the Pats will make him happy.

The guys a winner, The best slot receiver in the game!! Would make a lot of teams very happy to have him!

Figuring Tom Brady has some say in this, he's not going anywhere.

They should put that on TV..a staring contest between Belicheck and Welker. After that they play "hot hands"

Is this before or after Tebow's conversation with Brady about having his first baby out of Wedlock and the moral obligations he has to god now? The ratings for that one would be pretty high

A stare-down? No way. He's got Bette Davis eyes.

If Welker wants to lose another Superbowl, the Pats are probably his best chance.

In Welker's case, wouldn't it be a "stare-up"?

February 28, 2012  11:14 AM ET

Not sure how much it's Welker, how much it's Brady, or how much it's the system. Maybe take a little less cash and stay with a good thing.

February 28, 2012  11:42 AM ET

I doubt that Welker is going anywhere, but stranger things have happened in Patriot land. Hopefully they can get him signed up for 2-3 more years at good, but not outrageous money.

If they're really worried about it, Tom could slip him a few bucks. That is, if the palace he's building leaves him any.

He can borrow from Gisele.

Overblown story. He'll be franchised and then they'll come to terms on a long term contract.

I agree - the Pats will roll over about $7M in cap space from 2011, and are expected to have about $20M in space for 2012. Even if Welker's franchise number temporarily takes up a third of that space, the team still has room to make plenty of moves.

Based on past history of Pats hardline negotiations, Welker may accept their offer, but I doubt he will be happy with it.
