More so than the bad season (which he rebounded nicely with a post AS break .800+ OPS), it is the contract coupled with poor farm system, poor rotation and a market size (15th largest) that I don't think can support a contract of that size. Mauer's salary accounted for 21% of the team's total payroll last season. They cut payroll for 2012 so that percentage will tick up to about 23%.

yeah. mauer isn't the problem. the problem is that the gm who replaced terry ryan managed to squander a substantial number of assets. gonna take a few yrs to rebuild i'm afraid.

i'm not worried about them paying mauer's contract. pohlad family can afford it. and believe it or not, twins drew well till the end last year and apparently already the word is if you wanna go to a game this summer better get your tickets cuz they are going fast. so the revenue will continue to come in. as for the rest of your concerns, you're right. them's some big problems. not optimistic about this or next year unfortunately.

In my opinion....for most teams it matters little how much the owner is worth in regards to team payroll (Tigers owner Mr. Illitch being one of the exceptions), they aren't going to spend money on the payroll to a loss. I agree with you the attendance has been great, but how big is their TV contract, etc. since the size of the TV market is 15th in the country?

that's the other place the loss of morneau hurts. he's been one of the guys to speak up and to hold other guys accountable to professionalism and he's just been away from the team a lot.
