Valentine tweaks A-Rod, Jeter and the Yankees

08:09 AM ET 02.29 | Bobby Valentine rarely says anything by accident. And he truly seems to enjoy being an agitator. ... So who knows exactly why Valentine on Tuesday essentially belittled Derek Jeter's famous flip play from the 2001 playoffs, and praised the retiring Jason Varitek in part by saying he "beat up" Alex Rodriguez in their 2004 brawl. But Valentine sure as heck knew it would annoy Yankee fans, and perhaps the Yankees as well. Maybe he's again simply trying to change the conversation from chicken and beer, especially a day after his no-alcohol-in-the-clubhouse edict brought a cynical response from none other than the man he replaced, Terry Francona. Nothing turns the page for Red Sox Nation like tweaking the Yankees.

I'm not even a Yankees fan and I find Valentine annoying.

This could get interesting.

QUOTE(#4):

What was the "cynical response" from Tito?

Tito claimed the banning of beer in the clubhouse was jusr a PR move by the Red Sox.

QUOTE(#6):

Well, they're damned if they do, damned if they don't I guess. I hope they prove the naysayers wrong with a fit and dedicated team this season. Time will tell.

After last year they really had no choice to ban beer in the clubhouse. Considering 19 other teams also have the rule, it really was a stupid thing for Tito to say.

With guys like Youkilis, Ortiz and Beckett, I don't know if they will fit per say.

Every team has 2 or 3 fat guys who should be in better shape. But believe it or not Ortiz in in unbelieveable shape this spring. He looks fitter than I have ever seen him.

I'm surprised at him ... I mean, I don't blame him for being disenchanted and all, but like you said ... there's really no choice. He's got more class than that.

I liked Valentines response.

"Over there Tito gets paid to say things. Over here I get paid to do things."

Of course. Out of the three I mentioned, that pitcher with the big mouth seems the least in shape.

It's reverse osmosis. Valentine was paid by ESPN last year to do the same thing Tito is now doing.
