Frustration mounting with Brees

08:02 AM ET 03.01 | At this point, many may be wondering just what is taking so long in the case of New Orleans and its franchise quarterback. Frustration has built with Saints QB Drew Brees, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, and the team will use its franchise tag on him, short of a rapidly developing long-term deal. The NFL's franchise-tag deadline is March 5, and free agency begins the following week. As recently as Feb. 23, Brees told The Times-Picayune that he "still was very optimistic" a long-term deal would be reached, but the former Super Bowl MVP is surprised the situation has taken this long. ... [The falling price of franchise tags and Peyton Manning's contract situation] complicate the top-end quarterback market.

Anyone have a sense that this will not get done?

Everyone signed on to the lower cap in the CBA. Now everyone has to pay the price, owners and players alike.
Unfortunately, football fundamentals like blocking and tackling aren't enough anymore. Sound team management is getting very important. Watch the NFL begin drafting MBAs and finance guys in a separate draft in a couple of years, covered live on the Bloomberg Network. They'll have an Accounting Combine where they scoot around on office chairs, do spreadsheets and have NFL optomistrists measure the thickness of their glasses.

I've always been under the un-popular opinion that Chicago will some how / some way make an offer he'll consider / take and go back to his Purdue roots. Bye-Bye Cutler...

is Brees worried about how much he will make, or if the OL and receivers will return?

Watch for a new movie, "Unaccountably Blonde," about an extremely hot and brilliant female Harvard MBA who gets picked first in the NFL draft because of her brilliance in understanding cap space and contract negotiation, and her inexplicable ability to get guys to sign on the dotted line after just a one-hour private meeting.

Patience Drew, Patience. You are set up in the pocket of owner Tom Benson nicely. He is 85 years old and you will be getting some of his cash long after he checks out.

Brees is not going anywhere, he's the best thing that ever happened to NO, like Peyton in Indy as long as he is productive they will keep him.

I agree. Benson would have a fan mutiny on his hands. And you definitely don't want those French Quarter characters marching on your house with pitchforks and torches.

Worst case scenario (for Brees, anyway) is that he gets franchised. Which means they'll likely go through this again next season.

It would be great to know the figures in what is being offered and what is wanted. I can't remember how one player totally changed a franchise so quickly - he deserves to be paid.

Saints can just franchise him for two straight years and save money...but risk ticking off the face of your franchise

Thats what everyone was saying last year about Chris Johnson and look how that turned out. When these dopes insist on being the highest paid player ever, the teams shouldnt just open up the check book and say "yes sir."
