Brees not good enough for Loomis?

08:06 AM ET 03.02 | The signing of Drew Brees has gone from a no-brainer to something more complicated rather quickly. It took a natural disaster for the New Orleans Saints to be desperate enough to sign [Brees] in 2006. Six glorious years later, the team is privately trying to sell itself on the notion that Brees is simply a "very good" quarterback. That was the word coming out of the NFL scouting combine this past week, when Saints general manager Mickey Loomis tried to define Brees as "very good" when the quarterback was called "great," according to three league sources. All three sources were asking Loomis why it was taking so long to sign Brees to a contract extension. Loomis' answer spoke volumes.

Loomis, if you label the best quarterback the Saints have ever had as "very good" and not great, well, that tells me you are not "very good" either.

It's just contract talk. Loomis knows what he has and he's just trying to cut a tiny bit off what he is going to have to give Brees. Make no mistake, Drew Brees is going to be in New Orleans for a very long time.

Let te public posturing begin! All talk for Loomis to save money, but I feel very disrespectful to Brees. He has done so much for the team and city that it is wrong to uncut him like that. Of course, Brees wont say anything back because he has too much class.

There's contract talk and then there is talking trash....Loomis is playing with fire if he thinks Brees is going to give NO a "hometown discount".... Just a few months ago, his QB set the NFL records for passing yards and has taken his team to the playoffs just about every year since coming to NO, and winning a SB... With all the work Brees has done in NO to help the city rebound from hurrican Katrina.... Just sayin'

Or maybe it's just the team telling some reporter to get out of his face. Contract negotiations are not matters of public record. If the team and the player are talking in good faith, and neither one is passing notes to reporters, then let it go on that way. It's the way most deals get done.

Clearly they think he's only "good", or else they would've inked him by now.

This is pretty simple. Saints are being cheap. They have been for decades. They are hoping to talk Brees down.

Wow.....go on the cheap, you get what you pay for. BUT, remember NOT signing Pujols allowed the Cardinals a LOT of flexibility in signing other players!

Oh I agree, I'm not saying I think Loomis is right to do it. But anyway you cut it I seriously doubt Brees ends up anywhere else other than NO anytime soon, if ever.

Yeah, he probably is.
I'm thinking that they basically have a deal, but they don't want to announce it because they don't want the details to come out. They are, after all, still negotiating with other players, and keeping their agents in the dark about how much cap space is available makes it easier for the team to deal with them.

For sure if he lets Brees slip away Loomis will go down as the dumbest GM in history and will have to leave the state

the article also seemed to indicate the cost of a franchise tag, for various positions, is in a state of flux - for some reason, I thought the franchise tag cost was a set amount

Payton can make a QB look better than he is, Kerry Collins is evidence of that, but Brees has the upper hand.
they can tag him twice, he is not signing for anything other than premiere QB payola.

Would seem reasonable given his credentials

The cost of the tag is now the average of the highest player salary at that position for the last 5 years. This is a change that came with the new CBA. It used to be the average of the top 5 players' salaries in that position for the previous season. Given the rapid escalation in salaries, the new CBA makes the franchise tag cheaper for teams in the skill positions.
