Teen turning heads at Cards camp

08:12 AM ET 03.02 | There is but one teenager at St. Louis' spring training, and he is there at the invitation of manager Mike Matheny. Jenkins has a spindly, 6-foot-4 frame that figures to fill out as he matures. He already fires a fastball faster than 95 mph, and his mix of pitches is advanced for his level. He mixes a changeup, a sinker and a sharp curve with his fastball. A quarterback in high school who was set to potentially catch passes from Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III ("RGIII") in college, Jenkins has obvious athleticism. One of the nicknames he's picked up in baseball is "RGIV". Matheny has grouped Jenkins with [Chris Carpenter], Adam Wainwright and Jake Westbrook this spring to assure exposure to the major league staff.

That's a lot of hype/pressure to put on a teen-ager. Would have loved to have seen him catch a few 70-yarders from RGIII, though. Um, do you think it would be too much to mention his first name, though?

He will need a couple years of seasoning in the minor leagues.

And why are they calling him RGIV if his name is Jenkins?

Ya it makes him sound swedish. What I dont understand is how baseball is set up to let people like this just get found. While others need to get drafted. But if you come from out of the country you can just be bought. They draft 50 or so rounds in hopes of getting 1 - 2 players then bid on the ones they should be drafting.

What do you think of the Molina contract Lou? It seems a bit generous.

La-ti-dah. Shelby Miller is their top pitching prospect & they dont have room for him in their rotation. Why should we care about a teenage kid who's gonna need seasoning?
Molina got overpaid. Decent bat but they are paying him for his glove.

Tyrell Jenkins...they call him RGIV because he accepted, then turned down, a scholarship to Baylor and has similar athleticism to RGIII...

Molina overpaid? Aren't ALL ballplayers really overpaid? Relatively speaking, his BA has been on the rise for the past three seasons /.305 last year + you've locked up the current best defensive catcher 'till around age 35. Matheny probably is a fairly decent judge of backstop talent. On the pitching subject, if you want the definition of overpaid look no further than Loshe + Westbrook whose contracts should hopefully be nearing expiration.

Molina is overpaid only if you ignore what he means to the pitchers from behind the plate. A local reporter calculated the ERA of every pitcher he's caught for the last 5 years first with Molina then with other catchers. There was an average of a 1 run drop in their ERA with Molina behind the plate. What would it cost a team to drop the ERA of an entire pitching staff by signing better pitchers?
I think he's as valuable on the defensive side as Pujols was on the offensive side.
