08:25 AM ET 03.02 | Caps GM George McPhee took the occasion of a radio appearance earlier this week to discuss the future of Dale Hunter, as well as the past and present of Alex Ovechkin's weight. "Ovi's usually gotten by by just being a great athlete," McPhee told ESPN 980. "Show up and play. And we've talked to him, that doesn't happen in this league. At some point it has to kick in, you have to train, and he's at 224 right now." ... [McPhee was asked about Ovechkin's previous weight:] "I think the progression in his weights, he came in 218, 224, 232, 237, 242," McPhee said, which doesn't exactly reflect the team's prior reports. "He played at 242 once, and he got suspended for hitting a few people."

It's getting pretty bad. The other day, Bruce Boudreau called Ovie a "Fat ****".

Hmmmm.....he's played at 242 and is now currently at 224. If my math is correct that sounds like a loss of 18.

That's what I was thinking too. He was concerned but is no longer concerned???? Are they that bored that they are talking about an athletes former weight.

Aside from the weight issue, it sounds like they are also trying to get Ovie to do some training. He's gotten a little older and he can't just show up for the start of preseason and get into shape during training camp any more. The question is will Ovie's ego let work out in the off season?

Either that or McPhee is starting to play the blame game.

The knock on most Russian players - they get the big pay day and get lazy. He has not been the same player since getting blown away by Team Canada in the Olympics.

If Ovie is at 224 right now, that isn't a bad playing weight for his style of play. He should be doing off-season workouts to get into better shape to avoid the injury bug though. Mark Recchi was famous for his conditioning and it let him play into his 40's.
