Sources: Lupul has issues with Carlyle hire

08:28 AM ET 03.03 | There'll be plenty of time to weigh the pros and cons of Randy Carlyle's hiring as Maple Leafs coach. But the initial reaction of a key Leaf was telling. Joffrey Lupul, Toronto's second-leading scorer, was said by multiple NHL sources to be unenthused by Friday night's news that Carlyle would be Ron Wilson's replacement as head coach. One source who had spoken to multiple players referred to Lupul as "distraught." It's telling because Lupul played for Carlyle in Anaheim before he was traded to the Leafs in February of 2011. When the Leafs played against the Ducks in November - this before Carlyle was made a coaching free agent after a Nov. 30 firing - Lupul made no bones about his distaste for the way Carlyle treated him in the wake of a back injury that cost Lupul the bulk of a year on the injured reserve.

Burkie finally dumps rotten Ronnie and and hires another sour puss to take his place.

This should be fun today.

It hasn't even been 12 hours yet.

What a mess.

The Lupul angle was played in the same story that announced the change in coaches.

Oh man....

March 3, 2012  09:02 AM ET

This is something that can easily be fixed with a stern admission of guilt by Carlyle (I figured out how to spell his name). Now that's something Ronnie would never have done. Will Carlyle show he's different?

So the change is off to a great start!

March 3, 2012  09:04 AM ET

Burke went out to the ol' recycle bin to find what coaches were available.

They aren't getting to the playoffs and he may as well wait until the recycle bin is full.

I'm kinda looking forward to the Toronto/MTL game tonight. Not sure who I want to see lose more though.

Watching Burke get back to Irk-Com 5 is always good for the soul, but MTL losing always brings a smile to my face. Plus, it could bring the Doomsday Clock closer to 12:00 on Burke, and that's not a good thing, for me.

Perhaps Subban and Diane can get in a slapfight and half the MTL team could join in, to go after Subban of course. That would make it complete.

So many options.

I wonder why Burke didn't give the Marlies coach a shot at the NHL level? I don't know anything about the guy, but doesn't he have the AHL club at the top of their division? Some of the Toronto fans on this site speak very highly of him and he should be familiar with most of the young players that came up through the system.

Instead he goes out and hires another of his BFF's, a guy with the same reputation for being all warm and fuzzy as Rotten Ronnie.

Excuse me while I go look up the definition of insanity.

I agree. And I hope Burkie brought along the "Wheel of Meat" so Randy can pick a starting goaltender.

March 3, 2012  09:36 AM ET

And the Toronto train wreck continues.

Hey, Jeff. Daddy got a divorce and now you got a new mommy. Deal with it kid.

Did you see this hit from last night's Canadiens/Wild game? Best hit of the night, too bad it was on his teammate.

Here he is pointing out where a corner is to Kessel.

enjoyed!

The first time a Canadien throws a good hit this year and it's on a teammate.

If that had happened in Vancouver, the fans would be crying for a suspension.

That was a great game to watch. Great "hit."

Not what I call a house cleaning.

I think that Wilson and Caryle are the same person. Ever notice they are never in the same room together?

March 3, 2012  10:10 AM ET

Carlyle just said he "didn't use Lupul properly in Anaheim". Good start?

Also on the plus side, he apparently knows how to turn on a light switch in his closet. It's strange seeing a Leafs coach properly dressed...

March 3, 2012  10:37 AM ET

"distraught." Seriously.

Drop the gloves or pack your bags.

Three threads about a perennial losing team. Are we done with Nash and jackets?

Randy has never been mistaken for sardonic.
