08:08 AM ET 03.06 | Among allegations of bounties and reports of Randy Moss being brought in for a workout, the Saints have another issue on their hands. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees does not intend to sign the franchise-tag deal offered by the Saints, CBSSports.com reported Monday. WIST-AM in New Orleans, citing sources in the Brees camp, reported that the record-setting quarterback is "livid" that he received the franchise tag. Brees and the Saints can still negotiate a long-term deal, but if one is not reached by July 15 then Brees must either sign the franchise-tag deal or hold out. The franchise figure for quarterbacks in 2012 currently stands at between $16 million and $17 million.

Some teams, some owners just don't know how to handle success. This is not the way to treat an exceptional player, the face of your franchise, a classy individual, and a pillar of the local community.

Is he livid, or saying he is livid for negotiation purposes?

He's been a pretty stand-up guy. As the face of the franchise, it'll be interesting to see how he responds to the current mess they are in and whether he's going to be a "truthful traitor" or "loyal liar."

They've had months to come up with a new contract, and they run up against a deadline anyway, so they have to use the tag. Why don't they just get this stuff taken care of earlier?
The Saints look like they're on their way to a chaotic collapse. Look, dudes, you don't even have a first-round pick this year. If you go into the season with anyone but Drew Brees as your starter, everybody is going to look down and say, "Who dat?"

I agree. He's been a standup guy in San Diego and now in New Orleans. Must be hard to be that guy with a circus breaking out all around you. Could Brees be wanting out?

What does he expect? He's only a "very good" quarterback.

Though I would not be surprised, within the next couple of days, if Brees (and not reports from the Brees camp) says he is not livid, but indicates the franchise tag is only a way to continue negotiations after the league FA deadlines.

Is he livid about the Saints losing draft picks?

for what? being the first two that have been found violating a rule that everyone else violates as well....there is a liklihood that the NFL will have to sweep this under the rug because the moment they punish one person, there will be a flood of names, top players that are directly involved....they won't be able to punish just some of them...it's all or nothing and all would wipe out most of the NFL....

All he had to do was demand a trade to the Redskins & he wouldnt be livid. He'd be paid. lol i think the Browns told the NFL bout the Redskins to steal 1 of our draft picks 4 a QB. Gimme Brees, somebody damnit.

They tagged him right after the other story broke. It wouldn't surprise me if he looked around and saw the perfect storm the Saints are heading into. They don't have a first-round pick this year, and sanctions are likely to include taking even more picks from them. Their DC and HC will likely be suspended, or canned. A number of defensive starters could be out for a half-season or more. This team could be in the dumpster for years.

It sounds like the lock-out/CBA screwed up negotiations last year, and everyone is still recovering - for instance, the amounts for franchise salaries is still not set, a lot of short term contracts were made last year, etc - in addition, the big contract Peyton got last year, and subsequent events, is probably making teams more skittish than previously.

I think he's livid because he supposedly had an understanding with the front office that they would never subject him to the tag....they are reneging on the promise....quite a few players insist that they will only sign a contract with the understanding that there will be no franchise tagging...some even have language in the contract that prohibits the team from using the tag when the contract expires...

Hard to know, but this isn't exactly the kind of thing the Saints want going on right now, on top of everything else.
