Hockey Canada leans on NHL with Yzerman

08:25 AM ET 03.06 | Steve Yzerman is back for another Olympic Winter Games -- whether NHL players will be in Sochi is another matter. Know this, it's no coincidence at all that Hockey Canada was brazen enough to announce Yzerman and the rest of his Olympic management staff (which includes the likes of Ken Holland, Kevin Lowe and Doug Amstrong) despite not knowing whether the NHL will send its players. This is a bit of a power play. Hockey Canada, just like all the national federations, wants the best players in the world to be there. Just like all hockey fans do, too. Announcing Yzerman before anything is even close to being decided on that front adds a little pressure on the NHL to commit for a fifth straight Olympics.

Remember when Alex Ovechkin said he was going to Sochi regardless if the NHL sanctioned or not?

How hopeful are the Caps that he does so and they can void his contract?

Wake me up when they decide.

none should play. leave The Olympics to the amateurs, etc.
Another thing that would happen in a Spiny Norman administration

Mhm. And make the World Cup the premier event so the NHL actually makes some money off it!

Of course, you sacrifice your American audience, but...

Losing the American audience doesn't seem to hurt the World Cup even a little bit.
The hockey Wold Cup would be fine...

The NHL allows the players to go to the Olympics when it is in Canada, but when it goes to Russia well now they have to think about it. Seems to be a little self serving to me. Putin would take down the Buttgoblin if he tried to keep the NHL players out of the Olympics.

I agree. I am a little tired of the pro athletes at any Olympics. Basketball and hockey should just send the college kids or the other amateurs.

I'd love to see him back behind the USA bench....of course he'll have to get time-off from the car wash.

Sorry, perhaps I should clarify:

My understanding is that the NHL has lent its support to the Olympic hockey experiment because it provides a publicity platform for the game itself, and the players who make up their league. I suppose that can be considered true to an extent. My understanding of the main argument against is that the owners make little if anything off of the Olympic participation, and risk players that THEY pay getting hurt.

Now I understand what you're saying about the World Cup PLAY being absolutely fine, but I'm of the opinion that an international hockey tournament is supposed to help grow the game, and i'm not sure the World Cup would do that at ALL, particularly in the U.S. Certainly at least not to the extent the Olympics does in terms of overall exposure and media.

Not a position, just an examination.

He's hovering under the Gardiner this week with a squeegee and a sign that says "Will work for ugly shirts".

By not sending the best to play, you won't have a level playing field against the Russians. (or in this case, a level ice surface)

After seeing him every Saturday for 4 straight years it appears he's done that before.

Send the players. It's better than being kicked out in the first round by the Russian and other countries "amateurs"
