Thornton facing greatest challenge yet

08:30 AM ET 03.06 | Joe Thornton was surrounded Monday by reminders of the task at hand. To Thornton's immediate left was the locker of Daniel Winnik, with the team for just a week. To Thornton's immediate right was the locker of Dominic Moore, with the team less than three weeks. At various spots around the room were the spaces of eight other players, none of whom was with the team during the previous four seasons that produced four division titles. They are mixed with the spaces of the players who have been here but are underperforming. Thornton is the captain. This is his crew. And over the next month, he faces his greatest challenge. ... With all the trades and injuries, Thornton has been sent over the boards with a variety of linemates. But no excuses.

Yes, of epic proportions. I have always liked Joe, but he never could elevate his game in the playoffs. Teams have a way of shutting him down.

Yet another stupid subject/topic.

If they can't do it this year, they have to realize it's time to change it up big. One thing i'll give the Sharks credit for is they're never afraid of making the big move. This would have to change the entire fabric of the current make-up though. Thornton, Marleau, TRY and find somebody who will take Havlat's deal (it's not so bad if the guy would stay healthy). Rebuild around Couture and in two years they could actually be scary.

No testicular fortitude when it matters. If only he had someone like Brad Marchand living inside that huge frame of his!

Washington/ San Jose in a Cup Playoff would be like Minnesota/Buffalo in a Superbowl

When they could be talking about the Pens beating the Yotes last night. You're welcome Otis.

He faces his greatest challenge yet -- Part 123. Next week - 124.

Now, how exciting a discussion would that be, Burgh? Although, Smith trying to bury Matthew's face into the ice was interesting, wasn't it? :)

SJ wont make it very far; if they get into the dance

Absolutely. Matthew has had his resolve tested by the thugs around the league. I'm impressed that he hasn't done something stupid in retaliation. Although methinks the penalty for said retaliation might be along the lines of forfeiting his NHL career and his firstborn. Whatever. Cooke for Lady Bing.

I have to say, in the little bits that I have seen him, Mr. Cooke seems to have indeed stayed true to his word and changed his ways. If somewhat prematurely, I doff my cap to him. I thought he would fall off the wagon like Lindsay Lohan

You and I both.

Still waiting for that shoe to drop.

Canuck, if you can find it, can post the video of Cookie kissing the ice? I swear Smith was trying to kill him ("In the face. In the face!"). LOL!

I looked through the sports and couldn't find it.

Maybe I should check the public service notices? :-)

Maybe.

It was the funniest thing I have seen in awhile re: hockey.

I hate to laugh at anything at the expense of the Pens, but it is Matt Cooke. It gets slewfooted into the goalie (Smith) by another Coyote, and then Smith starts smashing his face into the ice, and then there is a free-for-all. Then Cooke gets up and does his "WTF" look? I was laughing for awhile. Hysterical.

Considering Smith used to play with T.B could be some old feelings from past games.
